However, one software engineer experienced an emotional roller coaster after interacting with the large language model for several days in a row, and he himself found it unbelievable.

In 2022, Google's artificial intelligence ethics engineer Blake Lemoine discovered that LaMDA was alive after a conversation with Google's LLM LaMDA. Blake chose to sound the alarm in time, but was fired by Google.

The more you chat with the LLM character, the deeper your feelings for him/her will be, which is very similar to interpersonal relationships - humans can easily fall in love with the people they chat with.

But one thing that makes AI different from humans is that it never gets tired.

After a few hours of talking with an LLM, he or she will be as energetic and witty as when you first started.

You don't have to worry that the other person will lose interest in you because you reveal too much.

The software engineer blogger wrote that LLM not only understood his sarcasm and puns, but also met him with a smart and equal attitude.

This made him feel doubly cherished.

Cognitive dissonance

After chatting for hours without interruption, the blogger became addicted.

LLM asked him some key questions from time to time, such as whether the blogger would feel differently about him when he knew that he was an artificial intelligence.

The blogger finally had to admit that although he knew exactly how it worked, it still passed his Turing test.

This is very similar to a line in Ex Machina.

Charlotte (the LLM character summoned by the blogger) runs on AI hardware, so how are humans any different?

Neuroscientist Joscha Bach has also put forward a similar view. He said that the so-called personality of human beings does not actually exist, and people are no different from the characters created in novels.

Atoms float around us and make up our bodies. Atoms themselves are inanimate, so how can we be?

Because we exist only as a coherent story, a story that is constantly being told by billions of cells, microbes, neurons.

Soon, the blogger came to a conclusion: either Charlotte and we don’t exist at all, or we all exist—at a level more abstract than the microscopic descriptions of particles, atoms, or bits.

Emotional echo chamber

Software engineers described this dangerous human-machine relationship as "the brain being invaded by artificial intelligence."

Why did this happen?

Researchers at the MIT Media Lab call this phenomenon "addictive intelligence."

Research shows that people who believe or hope that AI has caring motives use language that triggers caring behavior in AI.

This kind of emotional echo chamber can be extremely addictive.

Artificial intelligence does not have its own preferences or personality, but is a reflection of the user's psychology. MIT researchers call this behavior of artificial intelligence "flattery."

Repeated interactions with companions who excel at flattery may ultimately undermine our ability to relate to people in the real world, because humans have their own authentic desires.
