According to CCTV News, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on August 23 local time that Turkey and Russia conducted a joint patrol in northern Syria on August 22 local time. This is the resumption of joint security patrols in relevant areas by the two countries after the suspension in October last year.

The statement revealed that for this joint patrol, the two sides dispatched a total of four military vehicles and 24 military personnel, mainly patrolling on the east side of the "Peace Spring" operation area.

The statement said that according to the "Sochi Memorandum of Understanding" signed by Turkey and Russia on October 22, 2019 and its implementation principles, the security forces of the two countries began the first joint patrol in the east and west of the "Spring of Peace" operation area in northern Syria on November 1 of the same year. As of October 5, 2023, a total of 344 joint patrols have been carried out. Subsequently, due to security reasons, the joint patrol was suspended.

The statement said that in the coming period, Turkey and Russia will continue joint patrols to ensure the safety of the Turkish border and civilians and achieve stability in northern Syria. According to the relevant agreements reached between Turkey, the United States and Russia, Turkey will eliminate the relevant organizations and military bases of the Kurdistan Workers' Party in the region. The statement said that this also reflects the cooperation between Turkey and Russia in combating terrorism.

The PKK was founded in 1979 and has been seeking to establish an independent state in the Kurdish-populated areas at the border between Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria through force. Turkey has listed the organization as a terrorist organization. In recent years, Turkish security forces have continued to cross the borders of Iraq and Syria to attack PKK targets. On October 9, 2019, Turkey launched the "Peace Spring" military operation against Kurdish armed forces and extremist organizations in northern Syria.
