According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency on August 20, the “2+2” dialogue between the foreign and defense ministers of Japan and India was held in India on the 20th. Both sides agreed to coordinate the export of communication antennas for ships from Japan to India as soon as possible.

The report quoted the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun as saying that the antenna system being considered for export is called "Unicorn", which combines multiple antennas into one system, making it smaller and more invisible. This system was developed by a Japanese company and has been installed on the "Mogami" class frigates of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

If Japan decides to export this antenna system to India, it will be the second export of finished defense equipment after exporting the air defense radar system to the Philippines in accordance with the "Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment."

According to a report on the Times of India website on August 20, India and Japan will strengthen cutting-edge technology cooperation in the defense industry, including the "Unicorn" stealth antenna system for warships, as well as enhancing military interoperability through military exercises and cooperation in space and cyber fields.

Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara specifically mentioned Japan's "Unicorn" antenna system after the "2+2" ministerial dialogue held on the 20th. The system integrates multiple antennas of warships into a horn-shaped structure to reduce radar characteristics and the chance of being detected by the enemy.

A joint statement issued by the two sides said that after "successfully completing cooperation in the field of unmanned ground vehicles/robotics", the two sides "attached importance to making progress in the transfer of 'unicorns' and related technologies, and signed relevant arrangements ahead of schedule."

The report said that bilateral negotiations on the Unicorn system have been going on for several years. The Unicorn system can also detect the movement of missiles and drones because it can identify radio waves from a wide area. An official said: "India is inclined to introduce a limited number of such systems and transfer technology to improve the stealth capabilities of warships."

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh held a separate meeting with Kihara, in which he stressed that India hopes to work with Japan to enhance domestic defense industrial capabilities and achieve the goal of making India a global manufacturing hub.
