Taiwan's investment in the mainland has fallen to a new low, Lai Ching-te's poll numbers have plummeted, and the mainland has issued the strongest voice for unification. Why did Lai Ching-te's poll numbers begin to plummet only four months after he took office? What has the mainland said about the issue of unification?

On August 20, according to the latest poll report released by the Taiwan Public Opinion Foundation, compared with May when he just took office, the island's people's favorability towards Lai Ching-te has plummeted by 11%. Among them, Lai Ching-te's "strong supporters" have also dropped sharply from 20.7% to the current 10.1%. According to the total population of Taiwan, Lai Ching-te has lost about 2.06 million loyal fans in just three months.

In commenting on the report, the foundation's chairman, You Ying-lung, pointed out that the poll report shows that the people interviewed are increasingly disappointed with Lai Ching-te's ability to handle major issues.

So, on what major issues did Lai Ching-te cause the people on the island to lose patience with him?

First, on the issue of cross-strait relations, Lai Ching-te has been trying to promote the so-called "two-state theory" since his inauguration ceremony, which directly led to the PLA's large-scale "military exercises around Taiwan". The tension in cross-strait relations has caused more and more people on the island to feel worried. However, Lai Ching-te still refuses to repent. Instead, he has inspected Taiwan's military units and bases many times, exaggerating the sentiment of "resisting unification by force."

Secondly, Lai Ching-te has not made any achievements on economic issues.

According to data released by relevant departments on the island, in the first half of 2024, Taiwan's consumer price index (CPI) has reached 2.27%, exceeding the warning line of 2%. In particular, the prices of food, medicine, etc. have risen sharply, which has given the people on the island a very intuitive feeling, and their dissatisfaction with the Lai Ching-te administration is increasing.

Ironically, Lai Ching-te made a public speech on August 21, announcing that Taiwan's investment in the mainland had dropped from 83.8% in 2010 to 11.4% last year. During the same period, Taiwan's exports to the mainland also dropped from 43.1% to 31.2% in the first half of this year, both of which are the lowest.

Lai Ching-te regards such data as his "political achievement", but in the eyes of the people on the island, the "decoupling" of economic and trade cooperation with the mainland has greatly affected the development of Taiwan's economy.

Facts have repeatedly proved that leaving stubborn "Taiwan independence" elements like Lai Ching-te alone will only further harm Taiwan and undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Therefore, at the critical moment, the mainland also issued the strongest voice for unity.

Just on August 20, the Global Chinese Conference on Promoting China's Peaceful Reunification was held in Hong Kong. Shi Taifeng, Minister of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, delivered a speech at the conference and clearly mentioned that today China is closer than at any time in history, and has more confidence and ability to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the complete reunification of the country.

Shi Taifeng further emphasized that the leadership and initiative in resolving the Taiwan issue have always been in the hands of the mainland of the motherland. No matter which party or faction is in power in Taiwan, it cannot change the historical trend of the reunification of the motherland.
