The US think tank released a roadmap for China's unification with Taiwan. Lai Ching-te's poll numbers plummeted, and he lost 2.06 million loyal fans. At a critical moment, the Taiwan delegation went to Beijing. Why did the US think tank forward China's plan to unify Taiwan? Why did Lai Ching-te's support rate plummet? What signal did the Taiwan delegation send when they went to Beijing?
According to local media reports, Xiamen University, which is separated from Taiwan by a body of water, recently published an article about how to take over Taiwan after the unification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. Although the article was removed shortly after it was published, the Center for Strategic and International Studies in the United States saved the article and placed it on its official website.
There are two ways to achieve reunification with the motherland: military reunification or peaceful reunification. However, how will Taiwan be governed after its return to the motherland? Will it be "one country, two systems"? Or "one country, one system"? To what extent will Taiwan have autonomy? These have become the focus of attention on the island, across the Taiwan Strait, and even around the world.
Some media believe that the release of this report has some meaning of "a duck knows first when the river water warms in spring". The publisher of the report, Xiamen University's Cross-Strait Urban Planning Institute, may have gained some insight into the recent international situation or direction, and thus made early assumptions and plans for the unified governance method.
The reunification of the motherland has always been the wish of all patriots, and this wish is not changed by party, nationality, or territory. Regardless of political views, no matter where on the earth one is, as long as one cares about the Chinese nation, one will look forward to seeing the moment when the two sides of the Taiwan Strait reunite. On August 20, the Global Chinese and Overseas Chinese Conference to Promote China's Peaceful Reunification was held in Hong Kong. Shi Taifeng, Minister of the Central United Front Work Department, and Li Jiachao, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and other officials attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Minister Shi Taifeng pointed out the two major stumbling blocks to the reunification of the motherland. One is the "Taiwan independence" elements of the Democratic Progressive Party who incite cross-strait confrontation, ignore the 1992 Consensus, and insist on the "Taiwan independence" position; the other is the Western anti-China forces that attempt to "use Taiwan to control China" and attempt to contain China's development. However, Minister Shi also mentioned in the conversation that the initiative to resolve the Taiwan issue has always been in the hands of the mainland, and no matter which party is in power in Taiwan, it cannot stop the trend of the reunification of the motherland.
Not only is the external environment extremely unfavorable to Lai Ching-te, but he is also facing widespread doubts in Taiwan. According to the latest poll results released on the island, just three months after Lai Ching-te took office, his support rate has dropped by 10.6%. According to the population ratio in Taiwan, about 2.06 million people have already "lost their support" for Lai Ching-te.
In addition, the number of people who have a favorable impression of Lai Qingde has dropped by 10.3% compared with three months ago, while the number of people who dislike him has increased by 5.7%. It is obvious that the series of measures taken by Lai Qingde after he became the leader of Taiwan have not been recognized by the people on the island.
Cross-strait relations are becoming increasingly tense, and Taiwan's economy is becoming increasingly difficult. According to the Taiwan authorities' own statistics, Taiwan's consumer price index (CPI) has reached 2.27% in the first half of 2024, exceeding the 2% warning line. Among them, food, medicine and other categories closely related to people's livelihood have the largest month-on-month increase. Taiwan's fruit prices in June have even risen by more than 20% compared with the same period last year. Under such circumstances, the DPP authorities have to spend a lot of money to buy expired arms from the United States. It is rare for Taiwanese people to have a good impression of Lai Qingde.
At present, the Taiwan authorities have not yet lifted the restrictions on cross-strait tourism, and Kinmen, the closest to the mainland, is beginning to get restless. On August 21, Kinmen KMT representatives Chen Yuzhen and Hong Yundian will lead some tourism practitioners to visit the mainland in an effort to restore cross-strait tourism exchanges.
There is still more than a month left before the traditional peak tourist season in mainland China, the "National Day Golden Week". It is obvious that Kinmen knows that it cannot rely on the DPP authorities and has to do it on its own.
