[Global Times correspondent in France Shang Kaiyuan] A new study by the French Electronic Communications and Postal Administration (Arcep) reveals the changes in the communication habits of the French. Text messages were once indispensable, but are now experiencing a decline. At the same time, new trends are emerging in the way of connecting to the Internet.

French media "phonandroid" website reported on the 19th that common text messages have now been largely replaced by more modern and universal instant messaging platforms. In the first quarter of this year, French users sent an average of 103 text messages per month, compared with 113 in the same period last year. The reason for the decline is the enhancement of instant messaging software functions, adding voice messages, images, videos and video calls without additional charges. Therefore, many people think that text messages are outdated.

Internet subscriptions via fixed broadband have also fallen sharply. In the first four months of this year, only 290,000 new users subscribed to fixed broadband, a 30% drop from the same period last year. More and more users are choosing more flexible mobile packages, especially young people aged 18 to 25. Restricted by lifestyle and location, they often choose more flexible and cost-effective communication methods. Fixed broadband is gradually losing its appeal to them, which in turn changes the communication and network connection landscape in France.

According to observations by the Global Times correspondent in France, formal business and work communications in French society are still mainly conducted via email, while less formal work and daily communications or those between young people have largely turned to instant messaging software.
