Understanding severe pneumonia

Severe pneumonia, also known as severe lung infection or critical pneumonia, is a serious respiratory disease that endangers life and health. It is not limited to local inflammation of the lungs, but may also cause systemic inflammatory response syndrome and even multiple organ failure. Compared with ordinary pneumonia, severe pneumonia is more critical, difficult to treat, and has a poor prognosis, so it needs to be taken seriously.

Causes and risk factors

Severe pneumonia is mostly caused by bacterial infections, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacilli. It can also be caused by viruses (such as SARS, COVID-19), fungi, and certain atypical pathogens. Risk factors include but are not limited to:

1. The elderly and infirm;

2. Those with impaired menstrual function, such as HIV-infected patients and patients who use immunosuppressants for a long time;

3. People with chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
