Italy's national grid company recently announced that in the first half of this year, Italy's renewable energy generation increased by 27.3% over the same period last year, marking the first time that the country's renewable energy generation exceeded traditional fossil energy generation. In the first half of the year, Italy's renewable energy generation met 43.8% of its electricity demand, a significant increase from 34.9% in the same period last year, setting a record high.

In recent years, Italy has been accelerating the pace of renewable energy development and reducing the proportion of traditional fossil energy. According to statistics, in the first half of this year, Italy's coal-fired power generation decreased by 77.3% year-on-year, while the installed capacity of renewable energy power generation increased by 3,691 megawatts, a year-on-year increase of 41%, most of which were photovoltaic power generation. In addition, the number of companies engaged in renewable energy business in Italy reached about 37,700 in 2023, a year-on-year increase of 13.2%.

According to data from the Italian National Grid Company, as of the end of June this year, the country's installed capacity of renewable energy power generation reached 72.84 GW. Among them, the installed capacity of photovoltaic power generation reached 33.62 GW, a year-on-year increase of 22.8%; the installed capacity of hydropower generation reached 21.59 GW, a year-on-year increase of 0.1%; the installed capacity of wind power generation reached 12.7 GW, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%; the installed capacity of bioenergy and geothermal energy reached 4.93 GW, a year-on-year increase of 10.4%.

The Italian government has continuously strengthened its cooperation with the EU in the field of renewable energy. According to the National Energy and Climate Integrated Plan submitted by the Italian government to the EU, by 2030, the share of renewable energy in the country's electricity consumption will increase to 65%, and the installed capacity of power generation will reach 131 GW. The European Commission also recently approved a renewable energy power generation plan of the Italian government, supporting the country to build a renewable energy power station with a total installed capacity of 4,590 MW by the end of 2028. These power stations will focus on the development and use of geothermal energy, offshore wind power, tidal energy, etc., involving a total amount of 35.3 billion euros.
