In the era of information explosion, some eye-catching news often focuses on conflicts and contradictions, weaving an information cocoon, and people are surrounded by indifference, alienation, and anxiety. However, there are many warm moments and kind actions happening quietly around us. Beijing Youth Daily has specially launched the "Human Temperature" column to discover those stories that exude warmth from the daily lives of Beijing people: whether it is the sincere help between strangers, the silent dedication of volunteers for years, or the caring greetings between neighbors, these moments are the embodiment of a city's cultural heritage and human touch. We hope that through the stories in "Human Temperature", more people will feel the beauty of life and the kindness of human nature; we also hope that these stories will convey more positive energy and show the unique warmth and charm of this city.
Recently, a pregnant woman who was over 25 weeks pregnant suddenly gave birth on a flight from Haikou to Beijing. Fortunately, there were many medical staff on the same flight, including a nurse from the neonatal department. Yesterday (20th), a Beijing Youth Daily reporter contacted Chen Shanshan, a nurse from the neonatal department of Hainan Provincial People's Hospital who participated in the rescue of the newborn. She told the story of the critical moment at an altitude of 10,000 meters.
25 weeks+ premature babies born at high altitude
On August 3, Chen Shanshan, a nurse in the neonatal department of Hainan Provincial People's Hospital, took flight CZ3119 from Haikou to Beijing, and planned to go to the Institute of Child Health (Children's Hospital Affiliated to Capital Institute of Pediatrics) for further studies on August 5.
"The flight I took on August 3 was scheduled to take off at 8:15 a.m. and was expected to arrive at Beijing Daxing International Airport at noon. The accident happened at around 9:30 a.m., not long after the plane stabilized." Chen Shanshan recalled that she was sitting in the front row of the economy class, very close to the bathroom. "I heard screams from the bathroom before I finished my meal, and then heard the flight attendant asking on the radio if there were any medical workers in the cabin."
At first, she didn't know the specific situation. "When I heard that medical staff were needed, I raised my hand. There were two other doctors at the time." Chen Shanshan recalled: "When I went to the bathroom with the flight attendant, I saw a woman who had already given birth. She was holding intact amniotic membranes in her hands, which contained a premature baby and placenta." After some inquiries, Chen Shanshan learned that the premature baby was only 25 weeks+. "I was a little nervous at the time. First, because I had never seen a premature baby wrapped in intact amniotic membranes. Second, even in the hospital with adequate medical conditions, the survival rate of premature babies over 25 weeks is not high, let alone on an airplane."
Medical and crew joint emergency
Chen Shanshan said that seeing that the mother's condition was relatively stable, they moved to the open space between the business class and economy class with the assistance of the flight attendants for further rescue.
"The first step is to rupture the membrane and take the baby out of the amniotic membrane." Chen Shanshan said that after the membrane ruptured, the newborn had no vital signs. "I immediately performed chest compressions on the baby (newborn). After one minute of chest compressions, the baby's heart resumed beating."
"Extremely premature babies and extremely low birth weight babies need to be kept warm. The baby needs to recover body temperature as soon as possible!" Chen Shanshan told the flight attendant to bring hot water bottles and blankets to keep the newborns warm. Ensuring that the newborns have sufficient oxygen supply is also a crucial step. Chen Shanshan used the oxygen masks on the plane as oxygen supply.
Under the coordination of the captain, the plane made an emergency landing at Changsha Huanghua Airport. Chen Shanshan followed the ambulance with the newborn to a nearby maternity and child hospital. She did not rush back to the airport to fly to Beijing until the mother and the newborn were settled.
The newborn is in stable condition and the family expressed their gratitude
Mr. Sun, the husband of the pregnant woman, told the Beijing Youth Daily reporter that on August 3, his wife, who was six months pregnant, took their eldest daughter to fly from Haikou to Beijing. Unexpectedly, just one hour after the plane took off, his wife felt unwell and went to the bathroom and gave birth prematurely less than 10 minutes later. In this situation, his wife asked the crew for help and looked for medical staff. "Chen Shanshan stepped forward at the first time and rescued the child with professional nursing knowledge. Thank you for accompanying the child to the hospital after the plane made an emergency landing." Mr. Sun also thanked the crew and all those who participated in rescuing the child.
Mr. Sun said that his second daughter weighed only 820 grams when she was born. After half a month, she gained 50 grams and is now in stable condition, but she still needs further treatment in the hospital. Mr. Sun said: "We named her Sun Yian, which means 'a lifetime of peace'. Without Nurse Chen, the child would not have survived. We will send a banner to Nurse Chen to thank her in person."

"As long as he is safe, I hope the baby can grow up well"
Beijing Youth Daily: When you encounter a baby covered with complete amniotic membranes for the first time, do you know how to provide first aid?
Chen Shanshan: Under normal circumstances, the fetus is delivered directly without membranes. This parturient delivered the amniotic cavity, which includes amniotic fluid and the fetus. I have never seen such a fetus in the neonatal department. Later, I asked our obstetricians, and they had almost never encountered such a situation. My first reaction was that I didn't know what to do, but the fetus was in the membrane, and the first step must be to rupture the membrane.
Beijing Youth Daily: When there is a lack of various support equipment on the plane, do you have confidence in first aid?
Chen Shanshan: Our hospital has given emergency treatment to babies who were 24 weeks pregnant or more. When I learned that this baby was 25 weeks pregnant or more, I felt that there was still hope. Moreover, the mother kept begging us to "save the baby". So we consulted the mother and started emergency treatment to give the baby a chance. After the fetal membranes were broken, the baby was indeed in a bad condition, but through chest compressions and oxygen supply, the baby got much better, his face became a little rosy, and he began to breathe.
Beijing Youth Daily: After the plane landed in Changsha and emergency personnel took over, why did you choose to go to the hospital?
Chen Shanshan: I was holding the baby the whole time, and I was still doing chest compressions during the process, and I couldn't stop. There were two ambulances at the airport, one for the mother and one for the baby. I felt that there were not enough people on the vehicle at the time. I was also worried that the emergency personnel had never treated such a small baby before, so I followed him to the hospital.
I had planned to arrive in Beijing earlier, so I still had time to go to the hospital, and I also brought my cell phone with me. Later, the staff of China Southern Airlines told me that they had arranged my luggage, so I went with them without any worries. I left after the mother and baby were settled, and arrived in Beijing smoothly on the same day. I think this is the best arrangement. I hope everything is fine, and I hope the baby can grow up well. I also hope to receive the good news that she will be discharged from the hospital as soon as possible.
