Cailianshe News, August 20 (Editor: Zhou Ziyi)Apple Inc will produce its high-end iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in India for the first time this year, according to people familiar with the matter.

Apple Inc. has begun producing more of its iPhones in India, driven by financial incentives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the fiscal year ending March 2024, Apple assembled $14 billion worth of iPhones in India, accounting for 14% of its global production.

If the production of high-end iPhone models is transferred to India, it will be an important milestone in the development of the US technology giant in India.

High-end models often come with more efficient batteries, better cameras, and titanium bodies, and they also tend to require more specialized production lines.

Apple's main partner Foxconn will start assembling the new devices within weeks of the global launch this fall, according to people familiar with the matter. The company has now begun training thousands of workers at its factory in the southern state of Tamil Nadu to prepare for the production of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max as close to the global debut as possible.

The person also revealed that Apple's other partners in India - Pegatron India and Tata Group - may also start producing the Pro version soon.

Meeting local needs

Apple's iconic mobile devices are seen as a status symbol by India's growing middle class, and India is increasingly becoming an important market for Apple.

Apple CEO Tim Cook visited India last year to open the country's first Apple stores, and data showed last month that Apple's annual sales in India grew 33%, setting a new record.

As India starts producing more models locally, people familiar with the matter said that by the end of this year, Indian-made iPhones will meet local demand.

In addition, people familiar with the matter expect Apple to export most of the Pro and Pro Max devices produced in India to Europe, the Middle East and the United States because of relatively low demand in India for the more expensive versions.

Currently, about half of Apple's global revenue comes from the iPhone, and iPhone sales have not performed well in recent quarters. According to the latest exposure, the new iPhone 16 series will be equipped with better cameras, processors and displays.
