As one of the earliest cities in China to develop display panel manufacturing, Hefei's new display industry has developed rapidly and has become strong in recent years. It has been selected as a national new industrialization industry demonstration base and a national strategic emerging industry cluster.
Recently, reporters visited Hefei Xinzhan High-tech Zone and visited BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. and Hefei Visionox Technology Co., Ltd., focusing on how these two companies use small display screens to support Hefei's industrial dream of building the "first city of new display".
In 2008, Hefei signed a cooperation agreement with BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as BOE) to fully support the construction of a 6th generation LCD panel line in Hefei.
Taking this line as the starting point, Hefei has been pulling strings and weaving a network, and has successively built important strategic projects such as the 6th, 8.5th, and 10.5th generation LCD panel production lines, large-size OLED technology platforms, smart manufacturing factories, Mini LED and Hefei Jindongfang Hospital, with a cumulative investment of over 100 billion yuan... Hefei Xinzhan High-tech Zone has also become an important production and R&D base of BOE Group.

"One out of every four screens shipped worldwide comes from BOE." Ding Guanghui, Party Secretary and General Manager of Hefei Region of BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd., introduced: "At present, the company's shipment volume and shipment area have remained the world's first for many years, and the revenue scale in 2023 will increase significantly compared with 2020."
In terms of innovation and R&D, BOE has always insisted on investing about 7% of its sales revenue in R&D. At present, BOE has launched the first technology brand in China's semiconductor display field, including ADS Pro, f-OLED, and α-MLED. This move is not only an important milestone in the development of the industry, but also opens a new era of "technology + brand" dual value drive. As an important base for BOE's LCD business, Hefei has also promoted the innovation of technologies and products such as 8K ultra-high definition, borderless display, and BD Cell through process technology optimization and integrated innovation of production factors.
Technology is constantly iterating and upgrading, and more application scenarios are being developed and activated.
As Ding Guanghui said: "For each screen, we are constantly exploring the potential of technological innovation to enable display to empower more scenarios."
Today, BOE's digital hospital, smart dimming film, glass-based MiniLED backlight and other projects in Hefei are all manifestations of the innovative application of semiconductor display technology driving industrial upgrading.
Take the Hefei BOE Hospital located on the shore of Shaoquan Lake in Hefei as an example. As the first large-scale tertiary comprehensive hospital invested and built by BOE Technology Group, unlike traditional hospitals, the hospital makes full use of technologies such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence to realize digital medical care, digital operations and digital services.
In addition, digital medical technology has greatly broken through the boundaries of time and space, greatly enhancing the connection between patients and hospitals. Whether at home or in the workplace, patients can establish contact with hospitals anytime and anywhere, improving the accessibility and convenience of medical services and providing efficient technical and process support for medical staff's diagnosis and treatment activities.
Ding Guanghui said that in the future, BOE will accelerate the development of new quality productivity in the display industry with innovative technology, and provide direction for high-tech enterprises to cross the cycle of dimensional development based on scenario innovation. At the same time, it will take advantage of its own digital and intelligent advantages to actively participate in the construction of new urban infrastructure, and help Anhui and the entire Yangtze River Delta region to achieve high-quality economic development.
BOE's intensive cultivation in Hefei has triggered a series of chain reactions. In 2018, Visionox, the "leader" in the flexible screen track, also chose to set up in Hefei... At present, in Xinzhan District, Hefei, there are more than 120 upstream and downstream companies in the display industry, and a full industrial chain "from sand to complete machine" has basically been formed.
Visionox is one of the earliest companies in China to carry out R&D and industrialization of OLED flexible display technology. In 2023, it ranked third in the world and second in China in the field of OLED smartphone panels with a market share of 10%. At present, the Hefei Industrial Base has a sixth-generation fully flexible AMOLED screen production line with a monthly production capacity of 30K and a supporting module production line project. The product line covers many application fields such as wearables, smartphones, car displays, and IT.

In front of the Visionox booth, a mobile phone's screen can be slowly unfolded with a gentle pull; on another mobile phone, the concept of "back" has disappeared, and the entire front and back of the phone are wrapped in a wraparound folding screen. When fully unfolded, it looks like a tablet computer... "This is the industry's first flexible AMOLED pocket roll-up screen launched by Visionox," said a Visionox staff member, pointing to a screen that can be rolled up and stretched like a "scroll".
"Compared with traditional LCD screens, OLED technology has better display effects, higher contrast and brighter colors, as well as low energy consumption and lighter weight." Gao Yuanfeng, public affairs director of Hefei Visionox Technology Co., Ltd., introduced that Visionox insists on independent innovation and adheres to the development rhythm from basic research to pilot production and then to large-scale mass production. It has currently accumulated more than 14,880 core OLED patents.
In 2023, Visionox launched ViP technology for the first time worldwide. It is reported that this technology can further enhance the performance advantages of AMOLED, which can not only meet the needs of automotive for high brightness, long life, and special-shaped, but also meet the needs of products such as laptops for low power consumption and lightness. It can cover the full range of product size applications from wearables to TVs, allowing OLED to achieve "all sizes, both rigid and flexible."
Technology is advancing and cooperation is deepening. In May this year, Visionox signed a memorandum of investment cooperation with the Hefei Municipal Government to invest in the construction of the 8.6th generation flexible active matrix organic light-emitting display device (AMOLED) production line project in Hefei. The two parties plan to cooperate in the construction and production operation of the project in Hefei Xinzhan High-tech Industrial Development Zone, with a total investment of 55 billion yuan.
Data shows that in 2023, the output value of Hefei's new display industry will be 101.68 billion yuan, of which the output value of panels will be 53.4 billion yuan; in the first half of this year, the output value of new displays was 57.217 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 31%. The overall development of the industry is showing a good trend. In the future, Hefei will continue to work hard and continue to move towards the "World Display Capital".
