According to a report on the website of Russia Today (RT) on the 17th, the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) quoted an unnamed senior adviser to the Ukrainian government as saying that for some time, Ukraine has been planning to launch a cross-border offensive against Russian territory, just like what is happening in Russia's Kursk Oblast.

NBC reported that the senior adviser, who was not authorized to disclose the information publicly, said that the idea of launching an operation similar to the Kursk Oblast has been on the table in Kiev for more than a year. The adviser also said that one of the main purposes of such an operation is to divert Russia's attention from other parts of the 600-mile Russian-Ukrainian conflict front, especially from its military deployment in the Donbas region. The US media said that the Russian army is slowly weakening the Ukrainian army's defense there.

The report also stated that the Ukrainian army's attack on Kursk Oblast was a "high-risk gamble" for Ukraine, which was highlighted by the authorities in the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk urging local civilians to speed up their evacuation on the 16th. Last week, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that the Russian army controlled three settlements about 15 kilometers from Pokrovsk. "The question now is how long Ukraine wants to - and can - hold it (the Ukrainian army's control area in Kursk Oblast) without sacrificing more of its eastern hinterland," NBC reported.

RT reported that on August 6, local time, the Ukrainian army suddenly crossed the border to attack the Kursk Oblast of Russia. This was the largest attack launched by Ukraine on Russian territory since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Earlier this week, Apty Alaudinov, commander of the "Akhmat" special forces of the Chechen Republic of the Russian Federation, revealed that the intelligence obtained by the Russian military showed that the actual purpose of the Ukrainian army's cross-border offensive was to seize the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. He added that Kiev had hoped that its army would be able to achieve this goal before August 11.

"(Ukrainian President) Zelensky's blitzkrieg, which was supposed to seize the nuclear power plant in Kurchatov and start negotiations, give us an ultimatum, ask us to evacuate some places or do something, has failed," he said.
