From August 17 to 18, 2024, the highly anticipated "12th China Energy Scientists Forum and Carbon Neutrality Conference" was successfully held at Qingdao Haidu Hotel.
The conference was co-organized by China Energy Society, China Association for International Science and Technology Promotion, and Beijing Energy and Environment Society, and co-sponsored by China University of Mining and Technology, China University of Petroleum (East China), North China Electric Power University, Harbin Institute of Technology Business School, National Energy Coal Quality and Clean Conversion Key Laboratory, Beijing Institute of Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Institute of Engineering Thermophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao University, East China University of Technology, Shandong University, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, Beijing University of Science and Technology and other institutions, demonstrating the strong academic strength and cooperative spirit in my country's energy science field.
Themed "Gathering Youth Wisdom and Creating a Green Future", the conference aims to bring together top experts and scholars in the domestic energy field to jointly discuss sustainable development and carbon neutrality paths in the energy field.
The meeting fully exchanged views and discussed countermeasures on my country's low-carbon transition response strategy, cutting-edge technologies for carbon reduction, carbon sequestration and decarbonization, and feasible paths to achieve carbon neutrality, contributing wisdom and strength to promoting the construction of my country's new energy system and the smooth realization of the dual carbon goals as scheduled.

At the opening ceremony, Zhao Wenzhi, vice president of the Beijing Energy and Environment Society and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, made a profound analysis of the severe challenges facing my country's current energy development, including high dependence on foreign oil and gas and high pressure on greenhouse gas emissions, and pointed out the importance and urgency of achieving the goal of carbon neutrality. He emphasized that the vast number of scientific and technological workers have the responsibility and obligation to use their wisdom and technical expertise to contribute to the realization of the country's "dual carbon" goals.

During the forum, the "2024 Energy and Environment Young Talent Training Program" tutor appointment ceremony was successfully held, and a number of senior tutors were officially introduced to young scholars to strengthen the training and guidance of young talents in the field of energy and environment. The program was jointly established by the China Energy Society, the China International Science and Technology Promotion Association, and the Beijing Energy and Environment Society. It aims to cultivate young talents in the field of energy and environmental protection, and is committed to building a broad platform for their growth through systematic training and practical opportunities. The 2024 training program has appointed 8 academicians including Jia Chengzao and Yu Xinghe, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and top scholars such as the National Outstanding Young Scholars as special tutors. They will provide targeted guidance to young talents in their respective professional sub-fields.
The forum also organized a "poster exhibition for young scholars", of which 12 young scholars received honorary certificates from Academician Zhang Laibin of the Chinese Academy of Engineering for their outstanding achievements. They not only showed their personal style, but also stimulated the strong interest of the scientific research community in the field of energy and environment, injecting new vitality into the development of the field. In the academician theme report session, four top academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences - Ling Wen, Jia Chengzao, Wu Qiang, and Zhang Laibin - respectively delivered authoritative reports on core issues in the energy field, deeply analyzing the current situation, prospects and challenges of my country's energy development, and providing valuable insights and strategic guidance for promoting the sustainable development of my country's energy industry.
Academician Ling Wen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of the Shandong Association for Science and Technology, took the topic of "The Sustainable Development Attributes of Energy" and deeply discussed the importance and path of achieving sustainable energy development in the context of increasing global climate change and resource and environmental constraints. The report comprehensively analyzes the challenges facing global sustainable development goals, innovative paths for energy sustainable development, and the connotation and practice of the ESG concept. The report emphasizes the urgency and importance of addressing climate change, promoting energy transformation, promoting biodiversity conservation, improving the fairness of educational resources, and strengthening international cooperation. At the same time, the report also points out the important role China plays in the field of global sustainable development and ESG, as well as the challenges and opportunities it faces. By implementing innovative technologies and strengthening international cooperation, China is expected to play a greater leading role in the global sustainable development process.

Academician Jia Chengzao focused on "The Prospects and Theoretical and Technical Challenges of my country's Oil and Gas Exploration and Development". The report comprehensively analyzed the current situation, prospects and theoretical and technical challenges of my country's oil and gas exploration and development, and proposed corresponding solutions and development paths. The report emphasized the important role of technological innovation, sustainable development and international cooperation in promoting the development of the oil and gas industry, and also pointed out the key role of government policies in guiding and supporting the development of enterprises. Looking to the future, with the continuous advancement of technology and the continuous guidance and support of policies, my country's oil and gas industry is expected to achieve more stable, efficient and sustainable development. At the same time, it is also necessary to pay attention to the changing trends and challenges of the international oil and gas market, strengthen international cooperation and exchanges, and jointly respond to the challenges and opportunities of global energy transformation.

Wu Qiang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and president of the China Energy Society, delivered a conference report on "Discussion on Several Issues of my country's Energy Strategic Situation", which discussed and analyzed several major problems and characteristics faced in the development of my country's energy strategy, and pointed out the countermeasures and measures to solve these problems, which has important reference value for scientifically and accurately judging my country's energy strategic situation. He proposed to build a new pattern of high-quality energy development with "three pillars", including large-scale development and utilization of renewable energy, clean and low-carbon raw materials of fossil energy, and systematization of efficiency and energy conservation. These three ways out are equally important and complementary.
He stressed the need to accelerate the large-scale development and utilization of renewable energy, establish a large-scale development and utilization system that includes multiple energy sources, and improve relevant regulation capabilities and capacity, including promoting the construction of various energy storage capabilities, deep flexible transformation of thermal and nuclear power, intelligent transformation and construction of power grid infrastructure, strengthening research and technological breakthroughs in energy meteorology, and continuously strengthening the systematization of efficiency and energy conservation. He pointed out that there is a lot of room for improvement in efficiency and energy conservation in my country, and we must give priority to conservation, promote the optimization of industrial structure, and strengthen scientific and technological innovation.

Academician Zhang Laibin's report provides new ideas for the innovation and guarantee of the safety of my country's deep energy storage technology, which is of great significance for improving the safety of deep energy storage systems.

In the roundtable dialogue session on "Energy Transformation and Green Innovation Development", the host, Song Yongduan, an academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences and dean of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence of Chongqing University, led elites from various fields of industry, academia and research to gather together and conduct in-depth exchanges on the future trends and challenges in the energy field. Wei Zhenwen, chairman of Qingdao Degut Energy Saving Equipment, shared the latest breakthroughs in energy-saving technology, and Zhao Yijun, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Energy of Harbin Institute of Technology, analyzed the urgency of transformation from an academic perspective. Li Zhongyang, dean of the School of Electrical Engineering of North China University of Water Resources and Hydropower, discussed the application prospects of clean energy technology, while Dr. Guo Yi, director of the Beijing Low-carbon Clean Energy Research Institute, brought valuable experience in international low-carbon technology. Lin Jinmeng, chairman of Guoneng Hydrogen Oil, focused on the innovative achievements in the field of hydrogen energy, adding new highlights to the forum. Many well-known experts in the energy field, including Shang Jianxuan, Chief Engineer of Shaanxi Coal and Chemical Industry Group Co., Ltd., and Dai Caili, Vice President of China University of Petroleum (East China), gave wonderful reports and shared in depth their cutting-edge research results and profound and unique insights, providing valuable and important ideas and direction guidance for promoting the development of the energy industry in a green, efficient and sustainable direction.
The conference attracted more than 400 participants from academia, business, science and technology, etc. Through two days of in-depth exchanges and discussions, the participants not only enhanced mutual understanding and friendship, but also inspired new inspiration and sparks in the collision of ideas.
