According to a report by The Guardian on the 18th, an official from the British Foreign Office publicly announced his resignation because the British government refused to ban the supply of weapons to Israel. The diplomat believed that Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip violated international law.
According to reports, Mark Smith, the counter-terrorism official at the British Embassy in Ireland, said he had resigned. He said he had complained internally many times before resigning, including through official reporting channels, but received only perfunctory responses.

Smith said he worked for the British government assessing licenses for arms exports to the Middle East and that his colleagues witnessed "clear and unquestionable" war crimes and violations of international humanitarian law committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip "on a daily basis."
In his resignation email to British officials, he wrote: "Senior officials in the Israeli government and military have openly expressed genocidal intent, and Israeli soldiers have filmed videos of the deliberate burning, destruction and looting of (Palestinian) civilian property." The email also stated, "More than half of the houses in Gaza and more than 80% of commercial properties have been damaged or destroyed... Entire streets and universities have been destroyed, humanitarian aid has been blocked, and civilians often have nowhere to escape. Red Crescent ambulances have been attacked, and schools and hospitals are often targeted. These are war crimes."
