The Bai Ku Yao people dressed in traditional ethnic costumes, played bronze drums, and sang Zhuang folk songs at the music festival. This weekend, at the 2024 Nandan Music Festival, which just ended, famous musicians such as the Guangxi local bands Wayina, Ershoumeigui, and Shengxiang Band, which became popular on the Internet due to "Summer of the Band 3", gathered in Nandan County, Guangxi, to bring "original" music performances to music fans from all over the world. "I like bands with a strong ethnic flavor, and I hope that young people can convey positive energy through rock music." Fan Jiahao, a music fan born in the 2000s, said in a recent interview.
Nandan County, Hechi City, Guangxi, is located at the border of Guangxi and Guizhou. It is inhabited by the Baiku Yao ethnic group and has a strong ethnic cultural atmosphere. Banong, the lead singer of the Waina band, grew up in a small mountain village in Nandan County. As a musician from Nandan, he was influenced by the farming culture of his hometown and led this grassroots band, which was once composed of "street singers" and "bricklayers", to go deep into the countryside for a long time, doing half farming and half singing, and creating songs that focus on topics such as Chinese villages, farming, and homesickness.
Banong returned to his hometown to perform, still wearing a headscarf and coarse cloth. As the opening band of the music festival, Waina still displayed the vitality from the countryside in a simple way, blowing the horn, using leaves as accompaniment, and shouting in Zhuang language.
When talking about the feeling of returning to his hometown to perform, Banong expressed that he felt very at home. He hoped that the fusion of diverse music would satisfy the audience from all over the country. He also hoped that music fans would understand the Zhuang culture and make Nandan known to more people.
