Hugo Moore
Hugues Merle,1823-1881
French academic painter
Moore studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris
Studied under the famous French historical and portrait painter Leon Cogne
Moore's early works included some imperial and historical themes.
Later, it turned to mythology and folklore
Moore began exhibiting his works regularly at the Paris Salon in 1847.
He won the second prize twice in 1861 and 1863.
In 1866 he was awarded the Knight of the Legion of Honor
In 1861, the French government purchased his work "The Little Beggar"
(La Mendiante)
It is housed in the Luxembourg Palace.
Early 1860s
Moore met the most famous art dealer in Paris
Paul Durand-Ruel
Paul Duran-Lehr
William-Adolphe Bouguereau's agent at the time
He began to buy Moore's works
And introduce him to a similar style of painting
William-Adolphe Bouguereau
Since then, Moore has often fought with his rival and friend
Bouguereau's name appears together
Their works are often compared together.
Mid-1860s
Moore was once a member of the Duran-Reyer family
Painted several portraits
Because Moore's style is very similar to Bouguereau
So that after his death
His fame in Europe was quickly overshadowed by Bouguereau.
Gradually forgotten by people
But this does not prevent American collectors from
Admiration for his works
In the last decade of the 19th century
Americans have collected many of his works
Most of them are now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington
and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York
Girl with veil
Moore's works prefer
Allegorical myths and literary themes
Works that express maternal love are particularly outstanding
widow
Storyteller
Girl and fruit
Good sister
Tristan and Isolde
Romeo and Juliet
This painting is very poetic.
In the original work,
After the sacred kiss of the young couple who fell in love at first sight
Romeo asks for a kiss again
Juliet Shy says
You kiss by the book
(Your reason for kissing is very noble)
He said that every kiss was justified.
Mother's Love
Young girl with cat
The Madman of Etretat
A disturbed young woman sits by the wall, staring at the audience with bloodshot eyes. She holds a piece of wood wrapped in a blanket and wearing a hat in her arms like a baby. The tree trunks in the background are bare and the autumn color is cold, which adds a bit of sadness. Her messy hair blows in the cold wind. In this scene, I wonder if she is mourning her dead child or madly looking forward to having a child?

Girl in the Woods
Moore's experience also tells us from another perspective
In art, similarity is rarely a solution.
Art requires originality
Is different from others
His rivalry with Bouguereau
It seems to have verified a saying
Whoever lives longer is an artist
But we carefully compare the two of them
Bouguereau's work is clearly superior
More perfect
