According to public reports, starting from September this year, Guangming Middle School will no longer be completely dark at night. This century-old Shanghai school will be lit up and blend into the charming night scene of Huaihai Road and People's Square.

At the Huangpu District CPPCC Plenary Session in January this year, teachers and students of Guangming Middle School brought a special proposal, "To include Shanghai's outstanding historical protection buildings - Guangming Middle School teaching building in the scope of the landscape lighting upgrade and renovation project around People's Square." This proposal was not only formally submitted, but also listed as the leading proposal, becoming an important attempt to promote the integration of urban culture and historical buildings.
Now, this proposal is about to be officially implemented, and the teaching building of Guangming Middle School is finally "lit up".
According to the WeChat public account of "Shanghai Huangpu", on the evening of August 9, the lights of the teaching building of Guangming Middle School were tested. Through the form of "light and shadow drama and poetry", Huangpu's Shanghai style, red spirit, and educational fashion were displayed to citizens and tourists, creating a new benchmark for the night view of the east gate of Huaihai Road, and embodying the light classic of "Huangpu is the most Shanghai". At the same time, it will display the results of supporting activities such as the "Light up the Light, Illuminate the Dream" Science and Technology Art Camp that reflect the cultural and creative vitality of contemporary young people.
"I was very excited to see the school go from dim to lit up, and I feel very proud to be a participant in the project," said Yao Yilin, a student at Guangming Middle School excitedly.
According to a previous report by the United Times, in order to promote the implementation of this proposal, as early as April 8 this year, various functional departments in Huangpu District gathered at Guangming Middle School to respond to this special proposal on the spot. According to the plan, the lighting renovation project of the Guangming Middle School teaching building will be included in the landscape lighting optimization project of the surrounding area and will be implemented within the year, and student representatives will be invited to participate in the whole process. This proposal of "making Guangming even brighter" completed by students and CPPCC members was launched within three months, allowing Guangming students to experience the joy of their dreams coming true.
The proposal of "making Guangming even brighter" originated from the "loss" of Guangming students.
In the past, due to insufficient lighting facilities, the Guangming Middle School campus was "eclipsed" at night, forming a sharp contrast with the surrounding landscape of the People's Square. Can this century-old school be brighter at night? This idea has become a hot topic among students in ideological and political classes.
Under the guidance of ideological and political teacher Zhao Chengbin and CPPCC members, on October 26, 2023, the students of Class 8 of Grade 1 of Guangming Middle School formed a "Light Up Guangming" project team. They collected information and investigated the night view around People's Square and the lighting conditions of some middle schools. More than two months later, a "proposal on including the Guangming Middle School teaching building, an outstanding historical protection building in Shanghai, in the scope of the landscape lighting upgrade and renovation project around People's Square" was formed, and it was also accompanied by a "Huangpu Night View Tourism Map" designed by students and a night view lighting effect map of Guangming Middle School.
After improvement, this proposal, which integrates the wisdom of "big and small committee members" and integrates youthful imagination and rational thinking, was submitted at the Huangpu District CPPCC Plenary Session in January. It was listed as a key proposal of the District CPPCC in 2024 and was supervised by members of the Chairman's Conference.
According to the WeChat public account of "Shanghai Huangpu", over the past few months, under the decision-making of several district government leaders, multiple departments have worked together to promote this "lighting up" project with special significance. In the past few days, the "lighting up" project has finally started testing.
It is worth mentioning that the "Light up the Light" project will be combined with the activities of the Huangpu branch of the first Shanghai International Light and Shadow Art Festival. The two activities will be merged into one. It is planned to be officially lit up on the evening of September 21 and officially open to the public on September 22.
"This project is not only aimed at lighting up the protected building of Guangming Middle School, but also hopes to 'light up' the bright dreams in the hearts of children and their bright future. Through this innovative light and shadow art display, the public will be able to witness the birth of this unique achievement and experience the perfect fusion of art and historical buildings together." said Tao Zhen, director of the Huangpu District Lighting and Landscape Institute.
