According to the CGTN Maslak reporting team, at around 1:40 a.m. local time on August 18, after the missile alarm at the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in Russia sounded, several dull explosions were heard over the city of Kurchatov, which may have been the sound of interception by the air defense system. A minute later, they heard a violent explosion.

Kurchatov is a city of nuclear scientists, about 90 kilometers from the border town of Suja in Kursk Oblast, Russia. On the 15th, Ukrainian President Zelensky said that Ukraine had occupied the town. On the 17th, Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation President Likhachev had a phone call with IAEA Director General Grossi to discuss the situation around the nuclear power plant and invited Grossi to visit Kurchatov.
