Reference News reported on August 18According to a report on the Stars and Stripes website on August 15, the commander of the U.S. Special Operations Command, Brian Fenton, said on the 14th that an international small group composed of multinational special operations forces will be needed in the next decade to counter attacks from Russia and other countries.
"It can be said that this is an era of converging waves and global challenges that requires the integration of international special operations forces," Fenton said in his keynote speech at the three-day Indo-Pacific Unconventional Warfare Symposium held in Waikiki Beach, the United States.
The symposium was hosted by the Global Special Operations Forces Foundation, a Tampa, Florida-based nonprofit professional organization dedicated to improving the capabilities and effectiveness of special operations forces.
Irregular warfare is difficult to define but generally describes conflicts fought in economic, cyber and information domains rather than traditional hot warfare.
“Unconventional warfare is a critical tool for the Department of Defense to conduct operations across the spectrum of conflict, enhance interoperability and acquisition, and enhance our own advantage while undermining the operational advantage of our competitors,” U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wrote in an August 2023 memo providing updated guidance on unconventional warfare.
Interoperability is a military term that refers to the ability of one country to use another country's training methods and equipment.
