Xinhua News Agency "Deep Sea One" reported on August 18 (Reporter Wang Yuhao) The 2024 Western Pacific International Voyage Scientific Expedition Team arrived at the first operating area in the northwest Pacific Ocean at around 0:00 on the 18th (around 22:00 on the 17th Beijing time) with the "Deep Sea One" ship. The "Jiaolong" manned submersible will carry out 5 dives in the first operating area.
According to the diving plan, the first diving operation will be carried out on the 18th. Chief scientist Xu Xuewei and submariners Qi Haibin and Zhang Yi will board the "Jiaolong" to observe and photograph the distribution of seabed organisms from the slope of the seamount to the top of the mountain, collect biological, water and geological samples, obtain environmental parameter data, and comprehensively test the functions of the submersible.
Xu Xuewei said that in the first operating area, five dives will be conducted to survey benthic organisms and aquatic environments, providing samples and data support for studying the distribution patterns, connectivity and environmental gradient changes of biodiversity in the region.
It is worth mentioning that the Jiaolong will welcome the first foreign scientific researcher to dive in the first operation area of this voyage. Jaime Andres, a member of the expedition team from Colombia, plans to dive with the submariners Fu Wentao and Zhao Shengya on the 19th. They will investigate the potential organisms on the seamount ridges and collect samples of vulnerable representative species, seabed sediments, rocks, bottom seawater, etc.
The 2024 Western Pacific International Voyage is organized by the China Ocean Affairs Administration of the Ministry of Natural Resources and implemented by the National Deep Sea Base Management Center. It is planned to carry out 18 dives in three operating areas in the Western Pacific to investigate seamount biological communities, understand the location of seamounts, environmental characteristics and biological community composition, and provide support for the "Digital Deep Sea Typical Habitats" major scientific project.
