On August 16, the three-day final of the 7th China Graduate Student Innovation "Chip" Competition, "China Optics Valley Huawei Cup", was concluded at Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Nearly 100 experts and scholars from all over the country, representatives of leading enterprises, and more than 500 graduate students from well-known universities gathered in Wuhan to witness the birth of the "Chip" Star. On the same day, the Organization Department (Talent Recruitment Bureau) of the East Lake High-tech Zone and the relevant person in charge of the Hubei Semiconductor Industry Association signed a talent recruitment agreement with representatives of the three "Chip" Star teams and 13 first prize winning teams.

This year's competition attracted 970 teams from 169 universities across the country, including 858 instructors and 2,783 participating students, setting a new record in the scale of the competition.Since the first competition was held in 2018, the event has played an important role in serving the national integrated circuit industry development strategy, promoting the selection and training of outstanding young innovative talents in the integrated circuit field, and has received widespread attention.

The competition has three major directions: integrated circuit design, semiconductor devices and processes, and EDA algorithms and tool design. For the first time, the Optics Valley track was set up. Eight key integrated circuit companies in Optics Valley, as well as 18 chip-related companies including Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., focused on the actual frontier research directions of the companies, set up separate topics for this competition, and set up special awards for topic setting.

The 165 teams that entered the finals competed fiercely in computer tests, written tests, group defense and performances. In the end, the three teams of Huazhong University of Science and Technology Quantum Team, Xidian University Chengfengqi Team and Shanghai Jiaotong University Guangtou Qiang Team won the most popular "Chip" Star Award. As the only university in the country to host the event for two consecutive sessions, Huazhong University of Science and Technology performed well in this competition, winning 1 special prize, 4 first prizes, 5 second prizes, 2 Optics Valley Track Special Awards and 6 Enterprise Special Awards.

The winners of the "Chip Star" Award who settle in Optics Valley can be directly identified as "3551 Outstanding Young Talents" in Optics Valley and given a 300,000 yuan fund (disbursed in three years). Other awards also have corresponding funding. After the winning team settles in Optics Valley, they can enjoy services such as job search matching, business registration, settlement and housing, and talent policy application.

This competition is hosted by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the Organization Department of Wuhan Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wuhan Municipal Talent Work Bureau, and the Management Committee of East Lake New Technology Development Zone, and sponsored by Huawei and Bank of Communications Hubei Branch. During the competition, a number of high-quality activities were held at the same time, including the Dean Forum of Integrated Circuit Colleges, the Integrated Circuit Industry Summit Forum, the EDA Industry Frontier Technology Forum, the Talent Market Special Job Fair, and the "Optical Valley Day" visit, which built a platform for communication and cooperation between enterprises, universities and students, and helped the continuous development of scientific and technological innovation through industry-university-research collaboration.
