National Youth American Billiards Championship kicks off in Shanghai, with a record number of participants

On August 16, the "Shanghai International Cup" 2024 15th National Youth American Billiards Championship, hosted by the Chinese Billiards Association and Shanghai Sports Federation and co-organized by the Shanghai Billiards Association and the International Department of Shanghai Experimental School, kicked off in Shanghai.
209 young billiard players from more than 10 provinces and cities across the country, including Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Gansu, Shaanxi, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, Shandong, etc., gathered in Shanghai to compete for the annual American billiards title, which also set a record for the highest number of participants since the inception of the event.
The American Billiards Championship is a traditional event that Shanghai has maintained for more than 20 years. So far this year, with the strong support from all walks of life, the American Youth Championship has been held for 15 consecutive years.
This event has built the most basic platform for the development of American billiards in China and has provided a large number of talents, including world champions Chen Siming, Kong Dejing and many other outstanding players currently active in the Chinese billiards world, all of whom have been tempered in this arena.
The competition lasted for three days and the competition items were American 8-ball and 9-ball. In order to make this traditional event better serve the construction of the Chinese billiards echelon, with the approval of the Chinese Billiards Association, some adjustments were made to the group settings of this year's competition, setting up three groups: U11, U15, and U19, so that players of different age groups have better room to play, which is also conducive to the multi-level training and selection of outstanding young players.
Zhang Kechang, deputy secretary general of the Chinese Billiards Association, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. He said frankly: "I hope that the participating athletes will cherish and attach importance to this hard-won practical platform, fully demonstrate the results of daily training, and find gaps and shortcomings through competition with players of the same age group, so as to continuously improve their competitive level and psychological quality, and lay a solid foundation for future development."
The competition has received strong support from all walks of life. The International Department of Shanghai Experimental School has been the title sponsor of Shanghai and national youth competitions for eight consecutive years. It has been deeply integrated with the competitions, effectively promoting the vigorous development of billiards on campus. Currently, billiards has become a part of the physical education curriculum of the International Department of Shanghai Experimental School.
School officials and people in the circle said that as an educational sports activity that is both competitive and interesting, billiards is beneficial to the personalized and diversified development of young people, can enrich everyone's spare time life, and also has a positive impact on the tempering of the willpower of students.
The award ceremony for the 25th Shanghai Youth American Billiards Championship in 2024 was also held at the opening ceremony of the event. It is worth noting that the Shanghai Youth Billiards Team has been established recently. The selection rules are based on the points ranking, and finally 23 players will be selected for the 2024-2025 Shanghai Youth Billiards Team.
The relevant person in charge of the Shanghai Billiards Association said that the establishment of the Shanghai Youth Billiards Team aims to discover and train more outstanding talents and promote the development of billiards in Shanghai. In the coming year, the association will expand the channels for competitions and activities between the city team and young players from various provinces and cities, and actively participate in various public welfare activities to promote billiards and convey the concept of healthy and happy sports.
