"Is this vanilla the raw material for vanilla ice cream?" "This pepper has a beautiful color and is sweet!" On August 15, the Beijing Yanqing District Agriculture and Rural Bureau successfully held the "2024 Beijing Yanqing Vanilla Pepper Exhibition and Evaluation" event. The event was supported by the Seed Management Office of the Beijing Agriculture and Rural Bureau. Beijing pepper and aromatic vegetable experts, promotion specialists from Changping, Huairou, Miyun, and Yanqing North District, seed company representatives, dealer representatives, citizen representatives, large growers, and local agricultural technicians from Yanqing tasted and evaluated vanilla and pepper.
The activities were carried out in two planting areas. In the vanilla planting area of Beijing Lvfulong Agricultural Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd., there are 26 varieties of vanilla in 7 categories, including mint, edible chrysanthemum, rosemary, etc., with a planting area of more than 10 mu. In the pepper planting area of Beijing Maoyuan Guangfa Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., there are 71 varieties of peppers in 9 categories planted in greenhouses, with a planting area of more than 30 mu.
Evaluation experts observed the growth of herbs and peppers in the field, perceived their smells, tasted their textures, measured their yields, and scanned QR codes (to view the "type - family - characteristics" of the herbs) to select varieties suitable for open field and greenhouse cultivation in the region. Among them, 26 herbs, peppermint, broad-leaf rosemary, and Jiqing edible chrysanthemum stood out; among the 71 pepper varieties, 9 pepper varieties, including Zhongnongda No. 2 ox-horn pepper, Sophie No. 2 red bell pepper, Yuyi hemp flower screw pepper, Zhongjiao 1615 sweet pepper, Hangzhou No. 6 pepper, and yellow fruit pepper, stood out, providing strong practical support for the next step of promoting excellent economic crop varieties to the surrounding areas of Beijing.
The planting entities said that these new varieties are the "treasures" of grassroots agricultural experts. From seedling cultivation - planting - top dressing - application of medicines - harvesting, etc., the experts check the soil moisture, seedling conditions, adaptability, diseases and pests on site, provide follow-up guidance services, and promptly convey to us the most practical agricultural technology and the latest agricultural information, so that we farmers can select the most suitable varieties for planting.
Xie Jinshan, mayor of Yanqing Town, said that Yanqing has a unique climate and fertile soil. The "Thousand Peppers and Hundred Charms" demonstration model created in Maoyuan Guangfa Pepper Industrial Park provides sufficient guarantees for the display and promotion of new crop varieties, transforms innovative results into economic benefits, drives the integration of the three industries, and promotes the high-quality development of Yanqing's pepper agricultural industry.
Breeding good seeds, promoting good seeds, and planting good land are the mission and responsibility of generations of agricultural researchers. Professor Shen Huolin, a pepper planting expert at China Agricultural University, said, "With the improvement of people's living standards, the demand for peppers has changed from seasoning to fruit. There are many varieties and types of peppers. We have developed colorful pepper varieties that are highly disease-resistant and have unique nutritional value. At present, we are cooperating with Yanqing planting technology experts and planting bases to build demonstration planting bases and promote seeds and technologies. At present, the area of high-quality varieties is increasing year by year, and we continue to provide growers with good varieties to meet the diverse choices of consumers."
This year, the Seed Management Office of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs organized and implemented the "Vegetable New Varieties Support Variety Structure Optimization Action" to establish and improve the city's new vegetable variety display and demonstration network. It currently has national-level crop variety display and evaluation bases in Fengtai, Changping, and Tongzhou, and has built three comprehensive vegetable new variety display bases. At the same time, it has built 20 special vegetable and fruit new variety demonstration bases in Daxing, Shunyi, Yanqing, Miyun, Pinggu and other districts around the layout of vegetable industrial belts and scale-up groups. According to the various planting rotations and various planting methods such as open fields, greenhouses, and greenhouses throughout the year, a batch of "excellent and special" vegetable varieties are continuously selected, and comprehensive evaluation and observation and promotion activities are organized to radiate and drive the optimization of variety planting structure through the construction and renovation of new facilities. Among them, the Yanqing District Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs mainly arranges new variety display and demonstration around cool vegetables such as lettuce, aromatic vegetables and peppers.
