At the event, Chinese Basketball Hall of Fame members Liu Yudong, Wang Zhizhi, and Zheng Haixia, China men's basketball team's 1996 golden generation Zhang Jinsong, Zheng Wu, Sun Jun, and Bater, and Olympic delegation flag bearers Wang Libin, Song Tao, and Song Ligang gathered on the scene.

At about 20:20 on the same day, Liu Yudong, chairman of the Fujian Basketball Association, kicked off the opening match of the 2024 Cross-Strait University Basketball Tournament. This opening match was unique. The CUBAL (China University Basketball League) team and the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao teams each selected star players to form a joint team for a fierce confrontation. After a fierce battle, the CUBAL team finally defeated the Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao team 114-51.

In the next 10 days, 20 teams from universities across the Taiwan Straits, Hong Kong and Macao will compete in group matches, knockout matches and qualifying matches. On August 25, the champion of the 2024 Cross-Strait College Basketball Tournament will be decided.

This event is guided by the Chinese Basketball Association, Fujian Provincial Sports Bureau, Fujian Federation of Taiwan Compatriots, Fujian Radio and Television Group, and Putian Municipal People's Government, and hosted by Fujian Provincial Basketball Association and Putian Municipal Sports Bureau.

In addition to the ball games, the organizers will also arrange various supporting cultural and sports activities. From August 16 to 18, a "Colorful Carnival" event will be held in the square in front of Putian Comprehensive Gymnasium.

In his speech at the opening ceremony, Lin Xuyang, deputy secretary of the Putian Municipal Party Committee and mayor, said that we should uphold the concept of "One Family Across the Taiwan Strait", expand cultural exchanges through competitive games, and promote exchanges between young people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to go deeper, more practical, and more heartfelt.
