On the afternoon of August 16, Senior Colonel Zhang Xiaogang, Deputy Director of the Information Bureau of the Ministry of National Defense and spokesman of the Ministry of National Defense, released news on recent military-related issues.
Reporter: Recently, the US and Japan Foreign Ministers and Defense Ministers' "2+2" meeting announced the reorganization of the US military command in Japan and expressed concerns about China's continued rapid expansion of its nuclear arsenal. US Defense Secretary Austin stated at the first US-Japan "Extended Deterrence" ministerial meeting held at the same time that "Extended Deterrence" is the core of the US-Japan alliance. What is China's comment on this?
Zhang Xiaogang: Recently, the United States and Japan have been clamoring about the so-called "Chinese military threat" to create excuses for intensifying military collusion, creating camp confrontations and undermining regional peace and stability. We firmly oppose this.
As we all know, the United States is the world's biggest nuclear threat. The United States has the world's largest nuclear arsenal and pursues a policy of first use of nuclear weapons. In recent years, it has invested heavily in promoting the miniaturization and combat use of nuclear weapons. It uses nuclear weapons as a rope to tie up its allies and partners, and spreads nuclear risks abroad by any means necessary. Its attempt to maintain hegemony and intimidate the world with nuclear weapons is fully exposed. It should be pointed out that Japan, as the only country that has suffered a nuclear attack, has not learned from history, but instead caters to the United States in seeking so-called "nuclear deterrence", which will only stimulate regional tensions and increase the risk of nuclear proliferation and nuclear conflict.
China firmly pursues a nuclear strategy of self-defense, always abides by the policy of not using nuclear weapons first, does not engage in an arms race with any country, and maintains its nuclear forces at the minimum level required for national security. Any country that does not use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against China will not be threatened by Chinese nuclear weapons. We advise the United States and Japan to abandon the Cold War mentality, realize that nuclear wars cannot be won and should not be fought, and effectively reduce the role of nuclear weapons in national and collective security policies, and promote global strategic stability with practical actions rather than the opposite.
