On August 15, Hubei Olympic athletes Chang Yani, Wang Zongyuan, Sun Jiajun and Peng Xuwei, who had just finished their journey in the Paris Olympics, returned to Wuhan, Hubei. These four "post-00s" demonstrated the style of Jingchu athletes with excellent results in the Paris Olympics. When they returned to their hometown, they exclaimed that "the air they breathe has a familiar smell."
A total of 13 athletes from Hubei were selected for the Chinese sports delegation for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Among them, Wang Zongyuan and Chang Yani participated in the diving event, while Sun Jiajun and Peng Xuwei participated in the swimming event. Wang Zongyuan was a champion in the Tokyo Olympics, while Sun Jiajun and Peng Xuwei were competing in the Olympics for the second time and Chang Yani was participating in the Olympics for the first time.
At the Paris Olympics, Wang Zongyuan successfully defended the gold medal in the men's double 3-meter springboard and won the silver medal in the men's 3-meter springboard, becoming the new leader of Hubei diving. Chang Yani won the gold medal in the women's double 3-meter springboard and the bronze medal in the women's 3-meter springboard, winning 1 gold and 1 bronze in her first Olympic Games. Sun Jiajun and his teammates won the gold medal in the men's 4×100m medley relay, winning the first gold medal for the Chinese team in this event, and achieving a breakthrough in the number of Olympic gold medals won by Hubei swimmers. Peng Xuwei finished sixth in the women's 200m backstroke final with a time of 2 minutes 7.96 seconds, swimming her best individual result in the Olympics.
Several Olympic athletes who returned to Hubei took a bus to the Hubei Provincial Sports Bureau Olympic Sports Center and met the familiar coaches and teammates of the Hubei Provincial Swimming and Diving Team. Chang Yani said: "The first feeling of returning to Hubei is so familiar, and the air smells familiar." Wang Zongyuan said that he had not been back to Hubei for two years. Last year, he was busy with competitions. This time he came back and saw the coaches and teammates more cordially. He said: "I almost felt weak in the knees after not coming back for a long time. I was more nervous than diving."
Sun Jiajun and Peng Xuwei had a warm exchange and took photos with their coach Zheng Shan, shouting the slogan "Come on, Hubei Swimming!" Sun Jiajun said that he came back this time mainly to adjust his physical condition, meet his family, and miss the taste of his hometown. "What I miss most is Wuhan hot dry noodles." Afterwards, the group went to the Athletes Restaurant of the Olympic Sports Center and ate the hometown food they had been thinking about. Facing the delicious fried noodles, Peng Xuwei said happily: "This is the taste I have been thinking about for two months."
It is reported that at the Paris Olympics, 13 Hubei athletes won 4 golds, 1 silver, 1 bronze and 5 top 8 places. This is the best performance of Hubei athletes in the past four Olympic Games since the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The number of Hubei Olympic champions has been updated to 19, and the number of Hubei Olympic gold medals has been updated to 29.
