According to the Thai Constitution, a candidate for prime minister can be elected if he or she receives the support of more than half of the 493 members of the House of Representatives. On that day, Petunthan, as the only candidate nominated for prime minister, received 319 votes from the 493 members of the House of Representatives and was elected as the 31st prime minister of Thailand.
According to relevant procedures, Petuntan needs the king's approval to officially serve as prime minister.
The 37-year-old Petunthan is the youngest daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and the current leader of the Pheu Thai Party. She will become the second female prime minister in Thai history and the youngest prime minister.
On the 14th, the Constitutional Court of Thailand ruled that Setha had violated the constitution and dismissed him from the post of prime minister with immediate effect. Setha will continue to exercise the duties of prime minister of the caretaker government until Petunthan takes office and forms a new government.
