The 2015 film "Alamy" allowed movie fans to see the charm of the "Indian masterpiece".
No dancing or singing, but earnestly laying the groundwork for suspense, giving the audience a hearty audio-visual experience, and providing some directors with "Chinese-ized" material (not really).
Recently, another Indian movie known as a "God movie" was released. It is also a super long film without any singing and dancing segments. It is also a story that combines action, suspense, and crime. It still received rave reviews from the entire network.
Before it becomes "Certain Director's Selection", let's take a look at it with our friends today——Karma。
The protagonist of the story is an ordinary barber. He is silent and even a little absent-minded at work because he is always thinking about how to give his wife and daughter a better life.
After work that day, he went to the toy store across the street to buy toys at his wife's request. After finally picking out the products he liked, he witnessed the tragedy with his own eyes.
An out-of-control truck crashed into the house across the street at high speed, and the protagonist's wife died on the spot.
Fortunately, at the moment of the collision, daughter Jyoti was caught by an iron trash can and escaped by chance.
From that day on, the male protagonist and his daughter depended on each other for survival. The father and daughter regarded the trash can as their savior and named it "Laxmi".
Every week, they give Laxmi a "bath" and treat it as a living family member and pet.
In a blink of an eye, 13 years have passed. The daughter has grown into a beautiful young lady with talent in sports. The hero still works in the barber shop to escort his daughter's growth.
He would not tolerate his daughter suffering any injustice. Once, when his daughter was wrongly accused by the school leader of doing something bad, the male protagonist refused to leave the office and strongly demanded that the other party apologize to his daughter. Several security guards could not pull him away, but he finally received a sincere apology from the other party.
The male protagonist is like this, upright and a little stubborn. Although he cannot give his daughter the best life, he will still give him everything.
However, accidents always seem to happen to him.
During the days when my daughter was away at a training camp, our house was suddenly robbed. Strangely, the thief did not take any valuables, but only stole the trash can called Laxmi.
Although the things are not valuable, they mean a lot to the father and daughter. The daughter even remembered to video chat with the male protagonist during the training camp to see how he took care of Laxmi.
In order not to disappoint his daughter, the male protagonist went to the police station to report the case.
But no matter how he explained, the police simply didn't believe that he had gone to the trouble of reporting the case just for a worthless old trash can, and refused to file a case for the male protagonist.
The male protagonist became stubborn and simply stayed in the police station and refused to leave. Whenever he saw a policeman, he would repeat the story of how his trash can was stolen. The entire police station was overwhelmed by his nagging.
Even the experienced sheriff was helpless against the male protagonist, and even threatening him with a gun could not drive him away.
Finally, the hero suddenly came to his senses and took the initiative to bribe the sheriff, asking them to find their own trash can. He provided a clue about the robbers - one of the three had a lump on his back that looked like an ear.
While ordering his men to accept the bribe, the sheriff sent people to build a similar trash can to fool the male protagonist. He firmly believed that the male protagonist must be involved in other major cases.
On the other side, a dispute and a burglary that seem to have nothing to do with the male protagonist are happening.
The fat and prominent local councilman came to the repair shop angrily and accused the owner of driving away his car without permission and stealing his most precious sunglasses. He then beat up the owner and employees of the repair shop.
The employees of the repair shop were not convinced and challenged the fat congressman to a duel that night. They were extremely brutal and beat him to a pulp.
As for the burglary, it was even more shocking.
The two robbers controlled the hostess and her daughter, robbed them of all their gold and cash, took a bath and ate there in broad daylight, raped the hostess's daughter, and ignited natural gas to destroy the bodies when they fled...
The above is the plot of the first hour of "Karma", the male protagonist who stubbornly searches for a trash can, as well as irrelevant revenge fights and horrific home robbery and murder, make people confused.
But soon, the director revealed part of the mystery with a flashback.
While the male protagonist was staying in the police station, he happened to meet the owner of a car repair shop who came to report that his employee had been missing for several days and there was no trace of him.
The male protagonist touched his back and comforted him, but in fact he already knew the truth in his heart - the repair shop employee died in his hands.
In fact, after the male protagonist's house was robbed, he found a car repair bill at the scene with the information of the vehicle owner on it. He followed the clues and found the owner of the car, the fat congressman.
But after asking the other party a few questions, it was discovered that the person who broke into the house that night was not the fat congressman, but the employee of the repair shop who drove away the car.
At this moment, the employees of the repair shop came to challenge the fat congressman. Seeing how ruthless he was, the male protagonist suspected that he was one of the burglars.
The male protagonist followed them, but unexpectedly he was ambushed and beaten up by a group of people. Just when he was about to be killed, the male protagonist performed a miracle with his great strength, broke free from the restraints of others, subdued everyone with the razor he carried with him, and finally subdued the repair shop employee.
The other party readily admitted that he was one of the three robbers and revealed that another accomplice was an informant for the local police.
The male protagonist didn't waste any time and directly beheaded the other party for revenge.
In order to find another accomplice, he made up a story about reporting a case and looking for a trash can. He took the opportunity to stay in the police station and casually touched the backs of all the policemen, looking for the man with the swelling.
Seeing this, it is not difficult for friends to find that the male protagonist went to such great lengths, and it must not be just for that trash can.
The seemingly chaotic plot in the first hour of the film is all a narrative trick by the director, the purpose of which is to pave the way for the subsequent reversal.
The home robbery that killed the mother and daughter took place 13 years ago. The man in charge was named Selvam. He and his accomplices had committed burglary many times. They were brutal and had committed countless murders and rapes.
Selvam gave all the robbed money and gold to his family. His favorite was his two-year-old daughter. As long as his daughter said she liked something, he would satisfy her unconditionally.
However, Selvam was soon caught by the police. He began to discuss the next route with his accomplices. At that time, he happened to be in the barber shop where the male protagonist worked. He suspected that the male protagonist had heard the conversation between him and his accomplices.
Not long after, Selvam was arrested at home. The male protagonist happened to be at the scene, but he was not a whistleblower. Instead, he wanted to return the gold necklace that Selvam accidentally left in the barber shop.
But at this time, Selvam had already determined that it was the male protagonist who reported him, and vowed to take revenge on the male protagonist after he was released from prison.
One night 13 years later, Selvam called two accomplices, one was a police informant and the other was an employee of a repair shop. They lurked in the hero's house waiting for an opportunity to take revenge, but they never waited for the hero.
Because the man wanted to buy his daughter's favorite running shoes that night, he asked the store to look for them in the warehouse for a long time, which delayed some time.
Just then, the protagonist's daughter returned home from training camp and found three strange men hiding in a dark corner.
In a rage, Selvam beat up the hero's daughter and allowed his two accomplices to rape her, intending to bring eternal pain to the hero.
When the male protagonist came back from buying shoes, he found his daughter in such a miserable state and vowed to avenge her. He concealed the fact that his daughter had been raped, faked the scene of a burglary at home, turned his daughter's confession into his own, went to the police station to report the case and looked for the trash can, hoping to find the murderer himself...
So to sum up, "Karma" is a story of revenge that is interlocking.
Although the plot is simple, the director has made the whole story suspenseful, complex but not chaotic by disrupting the timeline and using parallel narratives. At the conclusion of the timeline, clear editing points are used to allow the audience to understand the logic of the plot from different perspectives in seconds.
The seemingly useless foreshadowing in the first hour of the film can be found in the subsequent plot, which can be said to be the standard configuration of "Indian magic movies".
The climax of "Karma" is when the male protagonist, with the help of the police chief, personally avenges the informant who raped his daughter, and fights back against the villain Selvam with real punches.
What makes the audience feel even more satisfied is that there is a shocking reversal at the end of the film, which directly echoes the title of the film "Karma".
The house that the out-of-control truck crashed into was actually the temporary residence of Selvam's wife and daughter. After he was imprisoned, the protagonist and his wife searched for a long time before finding the whereabouts of the mother and daughter, wanting to return the gold necklace that had not been returned at that time.
However, Selvam's wife did not want the stolen goods from her husband's crime, so the hero went to the toy store across the street to buy gifts at his wife's suggestion.
No one expected the disaster to come so suddenly. The truck crashed into the house, killing two adults and a child on the spot. It was actually Selvam's daughter who was accidentally protected by the trash can.
The male protagonist, who suffered the pain of losing his wife and daughter, couldn't bear to see the children become orphans, so he adopted Selvam's daughter.
In other words, Selvam beat his own daughter with his own hands without knowing it and also allowed his men to rape her.
It was not until the end that he recognized Jyoti's scar on her back as his own daughter. A sudden feeling of remorse and self-blame made him feel the consequences of his actions, and he eventually jumped off the building and died in despair...
In general, "Karma" is one of the more outstanding Indian films so far this year. Although the film is 150 minutes long, the plot is not boring. Instead, it becomes confusing and fascinating because of the multi-line narrative.
The subsequent truth-revealing section also has a perfect narrative rhythm, allowing the audience to intuitively feel the cool theme of the film that good is rewarded with good and evil is punished with evil.
The evil consequences caused by evil thoughts will eventually be borne by oneself.
