Reference News reported on August 16According to a report on the British Daily Telegraph website on August 14, a Chinese competitor of Tesla claimed to have developed the world's fastest charging electric vehicle battery.
Zeekr, a Chinese manufacturer backed by Geely, said the new battery for its 007 sedan can be charged from 10% to 80% in as little as 10.5 minutes.
The report said that upgrades in battery technology will help alleviate drivers' so-called "range anxiety" - which has been a major factor hindering the switch from fuel vehicles to electric vehicles.
Zeekr, one of a number of fast-growing Chinese startups, uses a new type of battery called lithium iron phosphate, which can be charged much faster than the batteries commonly used in electric vehicles today. China has a near monopoly on the development of lithium iron phosphate batteries.
Zeekr said that for the fastest charging speeds, you need to use the company's ultra-fast charging stations. The company has opened more than 500 ultra-fast charging stations in China and plans to double the number by the end of this year.
The report also said that the new battery technology comes at a time when sales of electric vehicles have stagnated in the Western world.
Overall, global electric vehicle sales are expected to grow 20% to about 7 million units in the first half of 2024, according to market research firm Romoshen. But much of this growth is driven by the Chinese market, as sales in Europe are up only about 1%.
