About three years ago, Meta revealed that it would try to make a VR remake of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which attracted great attention from some players. Unfortunately, the project will not be launched soon, as Meta officials have confirmed that the project has been "shelved indefinitely."
A Meta spokesperson confirmed to IGN via email that the game has been "on hold indefinitely." Additionally, the official Meta Quest VR YouTube account responded after a user commented on the trailer for Skydance Games' upcoming Meta Quest game, Behemoth.
"GTA: San Andreas is on hold indefinitely while we focus on other projects. We look forward to working with our friends at Rockstar in the future."
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR Remake was announced during Facebook Connect in October 2021. No gameplay footage or release window was shown during the event. In a gaming blog post, Meta described Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR Remake as "a project that has been years in the making."
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR isn’t the first time Meta has offered a VR remake for a game, as the company previously partnered with Armature Studio and Capcom to bring the original Resident Evil 4 to the Meta Quest headset.
Additionally, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas VR will be Rockstar Games’ second VR project after L.A. Noire: The VR Archives, which was originally released on HTC Vive in 2017, and then landed on Oculus Rift and PSVR in 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was originally released in 2004 for the PS2. The game is set in the fictional Southern California city of San Andreas in the early 1990s, where the player plays Carl "CJ" Johnson, who returns to his hometown to investigate the murder of his mother.
