Four selected technique demonstration paintings, process analysis

Teacher Jian said that the reason why he chose these paintings was because he wanted toHe starts with relatively simple watercolor techniques to introduce the watercolor art in his mind, so that students who have never participated in his physical studio classes can smoothly connect with his own watercolor experience.

The focus is to help everyone improve their aesthetics, learn to integrate aesthetics into techniques, and apply them efficiently to current needs, so as to achieve a qualitative leap.

Chapter 1: Beidou Town

This work can be said to be a very famous watercolor tool book by teacher Jian Zhongwei, published in the book "Watch Demonstrations, Learn Watercolor" in 2006.The main emphasis is on overlapping, stitching and rendering, which are the natural fusion and extension of the three basic watercolor techniques.

It displays the clear and bright qualities of transparent watercolor, the simplified color block aesthetics and the interest of semi-abstract modeling language, almost summarizing the classic performance of traditional transparent watercolor by Mr. Jian during his solo exhibition "The Realm of Form and Interest" in 2014.

Chapter 2: Venetian Gondolier

Teacher Jian Zhongwei's Venice series of watercolor works have been warmly welcomed by watercolor painters all over the world for many years.

"Venetian Gondola", created in a studio class in 2012, creates an impression of light and shadow atmosphere and a stable and balanced classical composition. The beauty of Chinese ink painting with broken strokes and elegant tones of British classical watercolor. It is one of Mr. Jian’s earliest classic masterpieces that attracted attention in the international watercolor painting community.

Chapter 3: Venice Starlight Cafe

Teacher Jian Zhongwei's night scene series attracts the audience's attention as strongly as the stars under his brush.

Most of these brilliant lights come from Teacher Jian’s"Unique techniques and usage tips of "white glue" (masking liquid):By using a multi-layered masking method with white glue, combined with brushing halo and overlapping details, the brightness of the illuminated area is expanded to more levels, allowing the "pearl light" concept to awaken the viewer's real memory.

Learn to use the lowest technical difficulty to achieve the highest technical performance.

Chapter 4: Overlooking Yuanshan

This work was created by Teacher Jian in a morning in 2015, when he quickly demonstrated aMore than fifty minutesImprovisational Watercolor ShowThis piece of work demonstrates a very important concept:"Massive inaction."

Bravely abandon the details of large areas to highlight the key points of small areas.Learn how to deal with complex subjects, grasp the value of making choices, and incorporate the spirit of sketching into the overall process.

In 2016, it not only won the Council Award at the 36th International Annual Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS), but also marked that Teacher Jian’s watercolor style is about to enter another stage of exploration and development.

Key learning points: Watercolor techniques

In the process of following the instructor to explore watercolor techniques in depth, every detailed analysis and operation can guide us. With his rich experience and superb skills, the instructor breaks down the complex watercolor techniques into easy-to-understand steps, allowing us to learn more efficiently in practice and understand the skills more quickly.

Whether it is the mixing and matching of colors or the lightness, heaviness and speed of brushstrokes, through the instructor's detailed analysis, we will be able to deeply understand the essence of watercolor techniques.

Say goodbye to blind imitation, and instead gradually master the essence of these techniques based on understanding.

01 Composition and layout

Find out the part of the subject that interests you most and your initial idea. Through sketches or pencil drafts, simplify the image and make appropriate primary and secondary distribution to improve the overall structure of the picture.

02 Sketching Attitude

The artistic expression of watercolor painting reflects the artist's personal aesthetic level; the artist's aesthetic vision will emerge in the artist's sketch performance. Synchronize your watercolor skills with the aesthetic requirements of sketching such as light space, size, concentration, strength, and priority.

03Water control techniques

Understand and adapt to the habits of water, master the fluidity of transparent watercolors, learn to check the humidity of paper and the water content of brushes, and control the spread of pigment within a certain drying time.

04Color grading concept

Learn the correct color matching concepts and the restrained attitude towards using colors, expand the use of cold gray and warm gray, and use the least colors to paint the richest color sense.

05 Watercolor Techniques

Re-understand the spirit of the three basic watercolor techniques of overlapping, rendering and stitching, integrate them, let the sketching attitude flexibly use the three techniques when necessary, and get rid of the subjective prejudice that "watercolor techniques are difficult".

06Assistive Techniques

Learn the two-level white space glue technique, combine it with brushing the bright parts and overlapping the dark parts, and expand the brightness of the illuminated area to more levels, awakening the viewer's memory and feeling of light.

07 Application of brushwork

Learn about the water absorption properties of watercolor brushes of different sizes, animal hair and nylon hair, master the rhythm of brush strokes of different sizes and the speed and angle of brush strokes, and create free and unrestrained broken white, clean and neat lines or simple and interesting brush strokes.

08 How to draw Go

The watercolor painting process is very similar to finding the "big scene" and "urgent point" in a Go game. From the beginning to the end of the practice, you are always looking for the most urgent, effective, and critical place to start. By following the rhythm and sequence of strength and weakness, you can grasp the overall sense of the picture.

09In-depth and enriched

Through the overall observation, we can restrain the description of meaningless details. We can paint in depth instead of clearly, paint richly instead of details, and explore the watercolor expression method with higher taste and artistic conception.

In the course, the instructor will explain in detail step by step from conception, drafting to coloring. In addition, Teacher Jian also shared his own creative experience and techniques, so that everyone can benefit a lot in the process of watercolor painting.

The form of this online analysis is also very novel. We can experience Teacher Jian's creative process in all aspects through videos, pictures and other forms. This is not only an opportunity to learn watercolor painting, but also a rare experience to get close to the master and feel the charm of art.

This will also be a course that transcends time and space. Everyone can learn Teacher Jian’s courses no matter when or where!

So, what are you waiting for? Come join us and start this magical art journey! Let Teacher Jian take you into the world of watercolor and experience the infinite charm and possibilities brought by colors!

I believe that in the near future your paintings will also reach a remarkable level.

The following is a letter written by Teacher Jian Zhongwei to his fellow painters. It may help you solve the problems you are currently facing!

To friends who love watercolor painting:

Watercolor is often considered the most technically difficult of all painting media. Many people believe that the biggest problem lies in the extremely unstable medium of water. The fluidity of water is difficult to control, which also causes the color of the painting to be dry in different degrees, and the painting will become dull and gray after repeated modifications, etc. In fact, I think it is probably a misconception that is often taken for granted.

The decision to use a certain technique comes from your thoughts and needs for the picture. This need comes from the painter's aesthetic consciousness. The formation of aesthetic consciousness is largely due to the habit and amount of sketching practice. The sketching mentioned here is not just the basic light and shade practice of pencil or charcoal, but the habit of using simple materials to practice a habit of integrating the overall relationship. This habit of always paying attention to the overall inspection is one of the best ways to improve aesthetics.

I often like to use Go as a metaphor, which emphasizes the concept of efficiency and often reminds me of the process of painting and the principles of composition. In these watercolor demonstration courses, you will find that when I paint watercolor, I always try to find the "big field" and "urgent place" in Go. From the beginning to the end, I am always looking for the most urgent, effective and critical place to start. Following the rhythm and sequence of strength and weakness is the only way to master the overall picture. If you don't prioritize when you make moves, you can imagine that the end result will be a complete defeat. Therefore, from the composition layout of the entire painting to the flying white effect of a brushstroke, no place can avoid the overall aesthetic observation.

Before we learn the relevant techniques of watercolor painting such as water control, wet and dry processing, color matching, etc., if we can rethink whether these picture effects come from a very clear will and need in your heart, then, magically and naturally, you will automatically fine-tune the brush in your hand, how much moisture and pigment it should contain, how fast to use, how much pressure to use on the tip of the brush, etc. Finally, you will find that you have finally mastered the skills.

"Jian Zhongwei's Selected Watercolor Demonstration and Analysis" is not an online course with real-time interaction. It is more like a set of watercolor demonstration teaching DVDs stored in the cloud (of course, with the development of Internet technology today, watching videos online has become a daily routine, and physical DVDs have long become the tears of the times). As long as your mobile phone or computer can connect to the Internet, it is unlimited in time and place, and can be watched forever and unlimited times.

Someone asked: Can I buy it without a foundation?

I think the existence or level of "foundation" is not a problem. What is important is your passion for watercolor and the amount of self-study experience, which are the key to evaluating whether to buy or not. What is the definition of no foundation? Is it that you have never painted watercolor, or that you can't paint well after several years of painting? If you have never tried to paint watercolors by yourself, I suggest you don't buy my teaching videos first, because your interest in watercolors is not enough to make you want to watch this course; if you have been self-studying watercolors for a year and a half, three to five years, but always feel that you can't paint well because of your lack of foundation, then this course should be suitable for you. If you are a watercolor teacher or watercolor painter, if you are interested in my watercolor concepts, techniques or teaching philosophy, if my watercolor paintings have moved you, then this course may have what you need waiting for you to dig.

Can I learn watercolor well by buying this video?

If you have this doubt and expectation, I also suggest not to buy it yet. This series of watercolor demonstration teaching videos is a collection of classic representative works of different periods and the evolution of concepts and techniques carefully selected from the live recordings of the demonstrations in the studio classroom in the past ten years. I re-edited and recorded the explanations to analyze Jian Zhongwei's watercolor art for students. These teaching videos were not specially made for beginners or so-called zero-based people. For example, how to sharpen a pencil, yellow plus blue will get green, what is overlap, what is stitching... etc. There will not be that kind of ABC common sense teaching. If you need a teaching video where the teacher guides you to paint step by step, then this course is not suitable for you.

There is no homework required for this online course. The purpose of opening this online course is not to help students check their homework, just like I open an art studio not to help students revise their homework. The correct attitude to take this course should be how you experience, ponder, and understand my composition ideas and technical principles through my painting process and explanations. For watercolor art, I only teach and impart knowledge, but the confusion of art must be solved by yourself.

I hope that when students watch this set of watercolor teaching videos, in addition to appreciating and understanding how each watercolor technique displays its effects, more importantly, they should find out the reasons for creating these effects, see the big picture, draw inferences from one example, and lay a solid foundation for your own future watercolor creation.
