On the evening of August 15, Alibaba Group released its latest quarterly results. AI drove Alibaba Cloud back to growth, with quarterly revenue increasing by 6% to 26.549 billion yuan, of which AI-related product revenue achieved triple-digit growth and public cloud business achieved double-digit growth. At the same time, Alibaba Cloud's profits soared, with adjusted EBITA profits increasing by 155% year-on-year, reaching 2.337 billion yuan in a single quarter.
In this quarter, Alibaba Cloud focused on the "AI-driven, public cloud first" strategy and continued to expand its technology and scale advantages. The financial report shows that Alibaba Cloud's external revenue (excluding Alibaba's affiliated companies' cloud revenue) also increased by 6% year-on-year, mainly due to AI-driven adoption of related products and double-digit growth in public cloud business. Among them, AI-related product revenue continued to maintain triple-digit growth in this quarter after achieving triple-digit growth in the previous quarter.
At the same time, Alibaba Cloud's profits soared. In the quarter, Alibaba Cloud's adjusted EBITA revenue increased by 155% year-on-year to RMB 2.337 billion, compared with RMB 916 million in the same period of 2023. The financial report stated that this growth was mainly due to the focus on public cloud strategy and improving operational efficiency, but the profit growth was partially offset by continued investment in customers and technology.
The financial report emphasizes that Alibaba Cloud will continue to invest in customers and technologies, especially in building AI technologies and infrastructure to drive the adoption of cloud computing for AI applications and maintain Alibaba Cloud's market leadership.
In terms of technological progress, Alibaba Cloud released the world's most powerful open source model Qwen2-72B during the quarter, which has improved code, mathematics, reasoning, instruction following, and multi-language understanding capabilities. After its release, Qwen2-72B topped the HuggingFace Open LLM Leaderboard open source model list. SuperCLUE, a Chinese large model evaluation benchmark, pointed out in its 2024 first half report that Qwen2-72B has become the number one Chinese large model and the world's strongest open source model, "surpassing many domestic and foreign closed source models" and "leading the global open source ecosystem." At present, the number of downloads of Tongyi Qianwen's open source model has exceeded 20 million.
At the same time, Alibaba Cloud has significantly reduced the prices of Tongyi Qianwen's nine main models. Among them, the API input price of Tongyi Qianwen's GPT-4-level main model Qwen-Long is as low as 1 yuan for 2 million tokens. This model supports up to 10 million tokens of long text input, and the price after the price reduction is about 1/400 of the GPT-4 price.
The price cut has stimulated the use of Alibaba Cloud AI products. The financial report disclosed that the number of paying users of Alibaba Cloud's AI platform Bailian has increased by more than 200% from the previous quarter. The Bailian platform integrates hundreds of large model APIs, supports enterprises to list general or industry models, and provides developers with a sufficiently diverse model selection. According to the 2024 "Magic Quadrant for Data Science and Machine Learning Platforms" released by international research organization Gartner, Alibaba Cloud has jumped to the Challenger quadrant and became the only Asia-Pacific manufacturer shortlisted in the report.
In addition, as the exclusive cloud service provider for the Olympic Games, Alibaba Cloud provided comprehensive support for the just-concluded Paris Olympic Games. At this year's Paris Olympic Games, cloud computing surpassed satellite for the first time to become the main method of Olympic broadcasting. More than two-thirds of the Olympic TV and online live broadcast signals were distributed globally based on Alibaba Cloud, transmitted from Paris to more than 200 countries and regions around the world, with more than 4 billion viewers worldwide. Alibaba Cloud's AI technology was also widely used for the first time in the Paris Olympic Games.
