Tsinghua University welcomes more than 3,800 new students: Dushi and Zhishan Colleges admit more than 250 students in their first year

On August 14, Tsinghua University welcomed more than 3,800 new undergraduate students.
The Paper learned from Tsinghua University that in 2024, Tsinghua University will admit more than 3,800 new students through more than ten types of admissions, including the unified college entrance examination, the Strong Foundation Plan, the Self-improvement Plan, and the National Special Plan.

Among them, there are more than 3,500 mainland students, covering more than 1,000 source middle schools in 31 provinces across the country; more than 60 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In addition, Tsinghua University continues to promote diversified openness and strengthen foreign exchanges and cooperation. It has admitted about 230 international students, covering 48 countries and regions around the world, including Vietnam, Kazakhstan, the United States, and Russia. The ratio of male to female freshmen is slightly more than 2:1. The number of ethnic minority freshmen accounts for about 10%, and they come from 26 ethnic groups including Bai, Buyi, Korean, Daur, Dong, Gelao, Hani, Kazakh, Lahu, and Li.
The Paper also learned from Tsinghua that since 2011, Tsinghua University has invested high-quality educational resources in remote, impoverished, and ethnic minority areas through the Self-Strengthening Plan and the National Special Plan. Rural students who are determined to pursue excellence, serve the country, have excellent character and academic performance, and strive for self-improvement. The qualification review of the Self-Strengthening Plan is strict. Applicants must actually study in the county middle school in the implementation area for three years of high school. The registration materials must be inspected by the admissions team and reviewed by independent experts. They can only be recognized after passing the strict selection procedures such as preliminary evaluation, preliminary examination, and re-examination. In 2024, the Self-Strengthening Plan will admit a total of 278 people, covering 228 county middle schools across the country, covering all enrollment majors such as computer science, Xinya Academy, clinical medicine, electronic information, automation, Weixian Academy, and Dushi Academy.
This year, Tsinghua University's Strong Foundation Plan attracted more than 16,000 outstanding students to sign up, and about 900 ambitious, interested and talented talents were selected through basic ability tests, comprehensive quality assessments and physical fitness tests. They will study in the five Strong Foundation Plan colleges of Zhili, Rixin, Weiyang, Tanwei and Xingjian, starting from Tsinghua Park, aiming at the stars and the sea, heading for the peak of science, and devoting themselves to basic disciplines and key national fields.
In addition, more than half of the students in the national training teams for mathematics, physics, biology, and informatics chose Tsinghua in 2024. After the selection of the training team, 13 of the 23 national team members who will represent China in the five major international Olympiads in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and informatics chose to be admitted to Tsinghua University.
The Paper also learned that in order to further improve the undergraduate education system, enhance the ability to cultivate talents independently, and push the Tsinghua-style Chinese college system to a new level, on June 6 this year, the tenth year of Tsinghua University's exploration of the development of the college system, Dushi College and Zhishan College were officially established and undergraduate admissions began.
Dushi Academy is oriented to major national equipment and major projects, integrates interdisciplinary teaching resources, and takes artificial intelligence as a starting point, aiming to cultivate leaders in the new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation. Zhishan Academy is based on the needs of science and technology and economic and social development, adheres to the concept of "integration of general and specialized knowledge, cross-training, and precise guidance" and the characteristics of "broad-caliber, complex, and international", and strives to cultivate leaders in the digital and intelligent society. As soon as the educational concepts and training programs of the two new academies were launched, they were enthusiastically applied for and widely praised by candidates and parents, and finally admitted more than 250 talented and outstanding students who are determined to serve the motherland.
