Earlier, the Constitutional Court of Thailand said on July 24 that it would announce the verdict on Prime Minister Setiawan's qualifications for office on August 14.
Setha was born in February 1962. He studied abroad in his early years and went into business after returning to Thailand. He is a successful real estate developer in Thailand. He announced his joining of the Pheu Thai Party at the end of 2022 and became one of the prime ministerial candidates of the Pheu Thai Party in 2023. He is a dark horse in Thai politics.
In May 2023, Thailand held a new election for the House of Representatives. On August 22, Parliament elected Setth as the new prime minister.
On April 28 this year, the Thai government's gazette website released the list of the reorganized new cabinet. This is the first cabinet reorganization since Settha was sworn in last September.
In the new cabinet list, Thai Prime Minister Setha no longer serves as Minister of Finance. Former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Stock Exchange of Thailand Pichai Chumkhavajira is appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and concurrently as Minister of Finance. Deputy Prime Minister Somsak replaces Chumranon as Minister of Public Health. Bambi is no longer Deputy Prime Minister but retains the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs. Minister of Transport Suriya is appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and continues to serve concurrently as Minister of Transport. In addition, Thailand's Minister of Tourism and Sports Sudayan and Minister of Culture Sensa exchanged positions.
At the same time, five new members were added to the cabinet: Deputy Finance Minister Paopong Rojanasakorn, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Jirapong Sintupai, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Phichit Chetpong, Deputy Agriculture Minister Artakorn Sriratayakorn and Deputy Commerce Minister Sucha Conggin.
Shortly after the list was announced, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bambi announced his resignation after losing his position as Deputy Prime Minister in a cabinet reshuffle. In his resignation letter, Bambi said he was willing to resign as Foreign Minister and all assigned positions, effective April 28, 2024, to make way for a new successor.
On May 16, 40 of the 250 members of the Thai Senate jointly submitted a petition to the Constitutional Court requesting the termination of Prime Minister Settha and then-Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Phichit.
The lawmakers who signed the petition believed that Phichit was appointed as the Minister of the Prime Minister's Office in the cabinet reshuffle, which violated the law. As Prime Minister, Settha was directly responsible and should be terminated from his post. Therefore, they asked the Constitutional Court to review and rule. On May 21, Phichit resigned as the Minister of the Prime Minister's Office.
