It’s not uncommon for live demos to go awry during presentations, but when large crowds of people are waiting to see what tech giants have been working on over the past year, the pressure is certainly high when things go wrong. Jess Carpenter and Dave Citron, two of the presenters at the Google Pixel 9 event, were likely battling internal meltdowns when they tried to present a live Gemini demo, because they couldn’t get it to work after two attempts.

Thankfully, when the third attempt successfully showed the results, both men’s heartbeats probably stabilized.

Dave Citron attempted to demo the latest version of Gemini Premium using a Galaxy S24 Ultra. The smartphone snapped a picture of a Sabrina Carpenter concert poster, and the host asked the digital assistant to check the calendar to see if he was available when the artist visited San Francisco this year. Dave said the Gemini Premium took the relevant information from the picture and cross-checked it with the calendar app to provide the result he wanted. Unfortunately, the demo didn't go as planned, as the live demo had problems on the first try.

On the second try, Gemini Advanced again failed to generate the desired result, with an error message "Something went wrong, please try again (13)". We don't know how Dave managed to keep smiling at the audience. Luckily, he decided to summon Gemini Advanced for the third time, and the system responded with the result, which was followed by a few seconds of awkward silence and warm applause from the audience.

It's worth noting that Dave managed to get Gemini Premium running on another device, suggesting that this Galaxy S24 Ultra may have had some issues, and it was indeed prescient to have a different model ready for the demo.
