Reuters reported Iran’s position on August 13, citing three unnamed senior Iranian officials as sources. One of the senior Iranian security officials said:If ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip fail or Israel deliberately delays the talks, Iran and its ally Hezbollah in Lebanon will launch a direct attack on Israel. The official did not specify what Iran had identified as a deadline for the talks.

The above-mentioned official said that Iran has been in dialogue with the United States and other Western countries recently about possible retaliation by Iran. The US ambassador to Turkey confirmed on the 13th that the United States called on Iran through its allies to avoid escalating tensions.

When asked by reporters on the 13th whether he thought Iran would give up its retaliation if a ceasefire agreement was reached, US President Joseph Biden replied: "I expect so. But we have to wait and see."

Iranian officials did not respond to the Reuters report. Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations said on the 9th: "We hope that the timing and manner of our response will not hinder a possible ceasefire (in Gaza)."
