"The infrared temperature measurement of the section between towers 49 and 50 of the 500 kV Xijin Line 3 is normal." On the morning of August 13, in Bazhe Village, Baru Town, Xichang City, Liangshan Prefecture, Cao Lang, a power transmission operation and inspection staff member of State Grid Sichuan Ultra-High Voltage Company, and his colleagues were carrying out special patrols after the emergency repair of the 500 kV Xijin Line 3 under the scorching sun.
Not long ago, at 23:41 on August 3, the State Grid Sichuan Ultra-High Voltage Company discovered during a night patrol that the sub-conductors on towers 49 to 50 of the 500 kV Xijin Line 3 across the Yalong River section were damaged to varying degrees and needed urgent treatment.

The 500 kV Xijin Line 3 is an important channel for the transmission of hydropower from Jinping I Hydropower Station and a supporting project for the Jinsu UHV DC. The damaged conductor spans the Yalong River Gorge from an altitude of 560 meters, with a span of 1,392 meters. Because it is located in an uninhabited area, it is difficult for personnel, vehicles, and horses to arrive quickly. After learning of the damage to the conductor, State Grid Sichuan Ultra-High Voltage Company quickly launched a level-three emergency response, mobilized 32 people to form an emergency repair team, carrying a satellite portable station, 2 generators, 12 sets of emergency lighting equipment, and 6 drones, and rushed to the scene from both sides of the Yalong River to carry out on-site inspections and repair preparations.
We are currently in the peak period of electricity consumption in summer. Based on a comprehensive assessment of the on-site situation, State Grid Sichuan Electric Power Company has decided to take temporary reinforcement measures for the damaged sub-conductors to restore the operation of the 500 kV Xijin Line 3 as quickly as possible in the shortest time.
At around 16:00 on August 4, a 35-member repair team from State Grid Sichuan Power Transmission and Transformation Company arrived at the scene, and the required emergency supplies, construction machinery and materials were also in place.
"There is only a patrol path to Tower 50. The last 2 kilometers of rescue materials, machinery and equipment to the site are transported manually. Meals are prepared at the foot of the mountain and then sent up," said Yu Bailong, head of the on-site rescue command center.
The next day, the temporary reinforcement work of the damaged sub-conductors officially began. 67 repair workers on the top of the mountain and at the bottom of the ditch raced against time and battled against the scorching heat. After five days and five nights of continuous work, they completed the disconnection of the most damaged sub-conductors, crimping and lifting of the old and new conductors, installation of tightening wires and accessories, repair of the remaining damaged sub-conductors, and line routing acceptance. The equipment was then put into operation with power on.
