Recently, Xi'an Zhongke Xiguang Aerospace Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Zhongke Xiguang"), an enterprise in the Airport New City of Xixian New Area, Shaanxi Province, successfully developed the country's first FP system point source methane monitoring satellite - XIGUANG-004 satellite, filling the gap in domestic commercial dual-carbon monitoring satellites.
It is understood that the satellite will be launched at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center at an appropriate time this year.
The satellite weighs 75kg and is the first high-spatial-resolution point-source methane monitoring satellite in China that is fully compatible with the GHGsat satellite. It is equipped with a methane concentration detector, a chlorophyll fluorescence detector and a multi-spectral imaging camera. It has multiple functions such as methane leak location monitoring, methane leak amount assessment, carbon generation source determination and regional carbon neutrality capacity assessment.
Among them, the methane concentration detector is based on the advanced FP imaging system, which can achieve a spectral resolution of 0.1nm and a spatial resolution of 25m. It has the functions of quantitative detection of methane column concentration and high spatial resolution monitoring of point source methane emissions. The spectral resolution of the chlorophyll fluorescence detector is as high as 0.5nm, which can effectively detect the weak fluorescence spectrum change information produced by plant chlorophyll photosynthesis, and can realize the evaluation of the total plant production, which plays a guiding role in carbon sink trading. The multispectral imaging camera has a ground resolution of 10m and is mainly used to collect ground images.
The satellite can provide data support and decision-making reference for multiple fields such as environmental monitoring, energy, and finance. It will help my country accelerate the formation of a methane emission supervision system, promote synergistic efficiency in pollution reduction and carbon reduction, and contribute to achieving the carbon neutrality goal.
In the process of global warming, the intensity of warming caused by methane is much higher than that of carbon dioxide. In a 20-year time scale, the warming intensity caused by methane is 84 times that of carbon dioxide. Therefore, compared with controlling carbon dioxide, reducing methane emissions is more meaningful in curbing global warming in a shorter period of time. Through satellite observation, it is possible to monitor and track point source methane emissions worldwide, with the advantages of large coverage, fast speed, and stable cycle.
It took Xi'an Jiaotong-Nanjing Institute of Technology two years to develop the XIGUANG-004 satellite. Relying on the technical foundation of the satellite, it is expected to make more breakthroughs in the field of dual-carbon monitoring in the future, and provide more accurate data support for the country's "dual-carbon" sustainable development major strategic decisions and global climate change research.
In July 2022, the Airport New City, as the Qinchuangyuan Airport Industry Cluster and Open Cooperation Demonstration Zone, officially signed a contract with Zhongke Xiguang with a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan to build a corporate headquarters, two R&D centers, three production lines and four satellite application areas, and is committed to building the first satellite big data application center based on hyperspectral technology in China, as well as an internationally leading and domestically first-class satellite assembly base, commercial aerospace innovation base and scientific and technological talent training base. It is expected that by 2025, the project will have an in-orbit scale of 30 satellites and an annual production capacity of 10 satellites. By 2030, the largest hyperspectral constellation system in China consisting of 108 satellites will be built.
