Recently, a netizen posted a video saying that an accident occurred in the Wanlong Gorge rafting project in Wugong Mountain Scenic Area, Pingxiang City, Jiangxi Province. On the evening of August 11, the Wugong Mountain Wanlong Gorge Rafting WeChat account issued a notice to stop rafting, saying that "due to the influence of rainy weather, the river channel needs to be repaired. In order to ensure the experience and safety of tourists, Wanlong Gorge rafting will be suspended from August 12." On August 13, the Wanlongshan Township People's Government issued a situation report that two people fell into the water during the Wanlong Gorge rafting, one of whom was slightly injured and one died after full rescue efforts. At present, the Wanlong Gorge rafting project has been suspended for rectification.

The local report mentioned that the accident was caused by weather factors, with heavy rain in the upper reaches and the water volume in the lower reaches suddenly increasing. According to the victims' families, the rafting boat capsized and both of them fell into the water. Because the current was too fast, one of them was washed away, and the other one could swim and climbed up by himself.

The scene described by the family members is not difficult to imagine, but it is still a bit surprising to many people - the rafting site is often long and narrow, and even if it rolls over, it seems that it is not difficult to rescue. People who have had rafting experience know that the safety hazard of rafting usually lies in collision after rollover, which is easy to cause trauma. As for being washed away after falling into the water, that is an extremely rare event. Not only are tourists unaware of such risks, I am afraid that the managers of the scenic area have never paid attention to them.

Objectively speaking, rafting has corresponding requirements for site conditions. Only when there is a drop in the stream can it produce excitement, and safety hazards are hidden in it. According to the information of the scenic spot, the Wanlong Gorge rafting is about 5 kilometers long and the rafting time is about one and a half hours. The drop between the starting point and the end point of the rafting is 168 meters. It can be imagined that once a sudden rainstorm falls, the rain will instantly gather in the lower reaches of the stream, and the flow rate will suddenly increase in the narrow section. Even for people who can swim, it is not an easy task to escape from danger. As for emergency rescue, distant water cannot save nearby fires. In such extreme scenarios, it is actually of little significance. The accident happened too suddenly, and people can only rely on self-rescue to escape.
