On August 13, Tang Shangjun posted a video on a social platform, saying that he had decided to go to college this year.

"It has been more than two months since the college entrance examination ended, and college is about to start. After a period of reflection, I decided to end this long high school life and start a new chapter in my life. I decided to go to college this year. The regrets left behind can be slowly made up in college, and the dreams I once had can be realized in college. I will strive to enter society as soon as possible, realize my own life value, give back to my family and society. I would like to thank my family and friends for their understanding and tolerance of my dreams in life, thank the society for its concern for my future, and thank the country for providing us with a fair and just college entrance examination platform, so that everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dreams. Tang Shangjun was born in Gongan Village, Shangsi County, Fangchenggang City, Guangxi Province. He has taken the college entrance examination 16 times since 2009. In the past, he was admitted to universities such as China University of Political Science and Law, Xiamen University, Guangxi University, Chongqing University, and Shanghai Jiaotong University, but he gave up and chose to repeat his studies.

In 2023, Tang Shangjun took the college entrance examination for the 15th time. He scored 594 points. He has said many times before that although he is not satisfied with this result, he plans to stop obsessing and "put an end to it for now and go to college."

But things did not go as planned. After Tang Shangjun decided to let go of his obsession, it seemed as if fate played a joke on him again. When filling out his application, he only chose teacher training majors. Unexpectedly, all four of his choices were rejected. Because the majors in the first-tier supplementary enrollment were not suitable, but he was unwilling to go to the second-tier, he gave up the supplementary enrollment.

After a period of silence, Tang Shangjun announced on August 28, 2023 that he would take the 2024 college entrance examination.

Over the years, there have been many controversies surrounding Tang Shangjun. Some people think that it is a fantasy for him to enter Tsinghua University, some people question whether he is a professional candidate for the bonus for repeating the exam, and some people think that he has wasted the quota many times and it is unfair to other candidates.

Tang Shangjun also said many times in interviews that the reason he persisted was because he was too obsessed. "Sometimes when I lie in the dormitory and look at the bed, I feel scared. How can I still be in the school dormitory for so many years? It feels like a long dream."
