A conversation full of twists and turns!
Tesla CEO Elon Musk was originally scheduled to interview former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump online on the social media platform X at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on August 12. However, it encountered technical problems at the beginning, and many users were unable to access the live broadcast, so Musk postponed the event. The conversation between the two officially began around 8:30 p.m.
Musk opened by saying the interview was meant to give open-minded voters a chance to see what it's like to talk to Trump. But Musk's tone made it clear he supports Trump. Twitter Spaces shows Trump as the host and Musk as the co-host. Shortly after the conversation began, Trump talked about assassinations, immigration and other issues.
So, to what extent can this dialogue boost Trump's approval rating?
Interview
Musk opened the event by saying it was to give open-minded voters a chance to see what it's like to talk to Trump. Musk reaffirmed his support for Trump. Twitter Spaces showed Trump as the host and Musk as the co-host.
Trump hoped the interview would help him gain more momentum after President Biden dropped out of the race and Vice President Kamala Harris revitalized the Democratic base. Musk, however, had to apologize for such a late and awkward start.
Trump also said he might never talk about the assassination again - but that was the only issue he discussed in depth once the interview began. Trump said it made him believe in God more now than before. Trump also praised the female Secret Service agent who took the stage with him that day. Trump also said he planned to return to Butler, Pennsylvania, for another campaign event after his last one ended abruptly due to gunfire.
Trump then turned his focus to immigration, one of the main campaign issues of his 2016 presidential campaign. He claimed that immigrants come from "insane asylums" all over the world. "Millions of people come in in a month, and she (Harris) stands up and pretends to do something about it." He claimed that there are 20 million illegal immigrants in the United States. Musk did make some slightly opposing arguments, arguing that immigration could be a good thing, but he quickly acquiesced to Trump's views.
Trump then talked about Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. He has long said that he "knows" Putin and Kim Jong-un. "They're very smart, but they're also very vicious," he said. He went on to describe a time when he had advised Putin not to attack Ukraine. "I told him, 'Don't do it. You can't do it, Vladimir.'" Trump said, "He said 'No way,' and I said 'Yes, there is a way.'"
Trump also said he wanted an Iron Dome defense system.
So how influential was this interview? About half an hour after the chat began, X Platform data showed that 1.2 million people were listening to the conversation. By comparison, last year when Musk helped Florida Governor Ron DeSantis launch his presidential campaign on Twitter Spaces, the live audience peaked at about 300,000. But today's data is insignificant compared to the telecasts of several other important events during this campaign. According to Nielsen ratings, more than 5,100 people watched the debate between Trump and Biden in June. Last month, 28 million people watched Trump's speech at the Republican National Convention.
Hacked
This interview was actually hacked.
Before the interview began, Musk said the outage was caused by a large-scale DDOS attack and would be fixed as soon as possible. "Worst case scenario, we will continue to reduce the number of live audiences and publish the conversation later," Musk said in his X post.
"A lot of people object to hearing Trump speak," Musk said as he began his interview with Trump after the massive cyberattack. Before Monday's event, Musk also wrote: "I will be doing some system expansion testing tonight and tomorrow to be ready for this conversation."
The chaos was reminiscent of a similar incident in May 2023, when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis encountered chaos due to a platform glitch during his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.
The hour-long broadcast was interrupted for long periods of time, and thousands of users were unable to join or were disconnected. DeSantis ultimately lost to Trump and lost the nomination.
At the time, Trump mocked DeSantis on his social media platform Truth Social, saying: "My red button is bigger, better, stronger, and works (the truth!), and yours does not."
Vice President Harris has erased Trump's lead in the polls and energized Democratic voters with a series of high-energy rallies. Next week's Democratic National Convention in Chicago is likely to boost Harris' momentum again.
return
China Securities Journal also noticed that after several years, Trump began to continuously update his tweets on Platform X. The former owner of Platform X banned the account "realDonaldTrump" for fear that Trump would incite violence.
On Monday morning, Trump returned to Twitter for the first time in a year and released a video emphasizing that the four criminal indictments he faces without evidence are politically motivated.
He quickly posted six more posts, resurrecting the account that had served as a primary method of communication during his previous campaign and his four years in the White House, including the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol by his followers.
Trump's last X-Message before Monday was posted in August 2023, calling for donations and showing a mugshot after he was booked into an Atlanta jail on a felony charge of trying to overturn the results of his 2020 election loss in Georgia.
intention
Musk, the world's richest man, supported Democratic President Joe Biden in 2020 but has since moved to the right.
His support for Trump, once tenuous, solidified in July when Musk threw his support behind Trump after a failed assassination attempt and said he would fund a political action committee that has spent $21 million to support Trump and oppose Democratic candidates, federal records show. The PAC is currently under investigation in Michigan for potentially collecting voter information in violation of state law.
Trump has long been a critic of electric vehicles, but after Musk's support, he changed his tune. "I support electric vehicles. I have to support them because Elon supports me very much. So I have no choice," Trump said at a rally in early August. And Sean Fein, president of the United Auto Workers, who supported Harris in the campaign, was called a "traitor" by Trump.
As part of a broader goal to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to climate change, the Biden administration has been working to promote electric vehicles through tax cuts and other support measures. Congressional Republicans oppose these subsidies. Trump's vice presidential running mate, Senator JD Vance, said Biden's policies are just subsidizing rich people to buy cars.
After Trump lost his reelection in 2020, Musk said he was "very excited" about Biden's climate change agenda and optimistic about a "sustainable energy future." However, Musk soon became angry and was extremely unhappy that the White House did not invite Tesla to a 2021 gathering of electric car manufacturers. In December of the same year, Musk distanced himself from Biden's initiatives and criticized what eventually became the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), a major economic stimulus plan built in part on subsidies for clean energy.
