A highly anticipated interview was delayed due to suspected network technical failure.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk was originally scheduled to interview former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump online on social media platform X at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on August 12. Before the live interview began, it was suspected to be attacked by hackers, and after more than 40 minutes of delay, the interview finally began.

Musk: X suffered a massive cyber attack

Musk's interview with Trump did not go on as planned. Many X users who wanted to watch the interview tried to join the live broadcast space before the interview started, but received a prompt that "this space is not available" and could not successfully enter the live broadcast space.

"X appears to have been the subject of a large-scale DDOS cyber attack and we are working to stop it. In the worst case scenario, we will continue the interview with Trump with only a small live audience and release the conversation later," Musk said in a post.

Musk attributed the screen freeze to a cyberattack. Musk said the company had tested the system with 8 million concurrent listeners early on August 12 to prevent any technical errors and ensure that X's live broadcast capabilities could handle the event.

Many people responded to Trump's tweet saying they heard the same thing or were unable to get in. In response to a request for comment from the media, a Trump campaign spokesperson pointed to Musk's post on X accusing the potential cyberattack.

Musk said, I apologize for the delayed launch. Our servers have been hit by a massive DDOS (distributed denial of service) attack and all our data lines are saturated.

It is reported that in preparation for this interview, Musk conducted two live broadcast tests on Sunday, attracting 2.1 million and 1.3 million views respectively.

Trump returns to X platform

Earlier, Trump posted several posts on the social media platform X, including several campaign messages and a promotional copy that he would be interviewed by Musk, which foreshadowed Trump's official return to X after being banned on January 6, 2021 due to the riots at the U.S. Capitol.

Trump had previously used Twitter during his presidency, but was banned from the platform for life for inciting the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Musk restored Trump's account after acquiring Twitter (later renamed it X) in late 2022. Since then, Trump has only posted one headshot on the platform.

It is worth mentioning that Musk's interview with Trump was conducted on the X platform. The interview was impromptu, without a script, and there were no restrictions on the subject of the content.

In addition, an analysis found that among the tweets posted by Musk this year, political tweets accounted for 17%, a significant increase from 2% in 2021; while tweets related to Musk’s two most famous companies, Tesla and SpaceX, fell from 30% to 13% during this period.

Musk spoke out after the shooting at Trump's campaign rally. Musk posted on social media, "I fully support President Trump and hope he (Trump) recovers soon." He also said, "The last time the United States had such a strong candidate was Theodore Roosevelt."

The interview covered topics such as new government agencies

In the live interview with Trump, Musk offered to play a role in helping cut federal spending in a second Trump administration, appearing to indicate that the world's richest man is increasingly inserting himself into American politics.

Musk called for the establishment of a government committee to ensure that taxpayers' money is used effectively, and said he would play a role in the process. Musk said, "I would be happy to help on such a committee, and I would be happy if it were established." Trump praised Musk's idea.

In the interview, Trump reiterated his views on immigration, the Biden administration and Vice President Harris. He also reiterated that he gets along well with Russian leader Putin. When talking about inflation, Trump said, "People are completely destroyed by inflation" and "We have to bring prices down."

In addition, Trump said that it was "unreasonable" that the United States did not have high-speed trains, and he suggested changing this situation through high-speed tunnels. Trump also mentioned that if he was successfully elected president, he would "close the Department of Education and transfer education back to the states."

"I don't think we should denigrate the oil and gas industry," Musk said of the oil and gas industry. He said the economy relies on those energy sources. But he did say he wants the U.S. to move to a "more sustainable economy" because of environmental pollution.
