According to the British newspaper Metro, a school staff member in the United States will be sentenced to nine years in prison for stealing more than $1.5 million worth of chicken wings.
Vera Liddell, 68, a food service supervisor for the Harvey School District, admitted to ordering more than 10,000 boxes of chicken wings from a designated supplier over the course of a year and then using the school's van to haul the wings away for her own use. Prosecutors in Cook County, Illinois, said the food was meant for students to take home while they were taking classes remotely during the coronavirus pandemic.
The Cook County Attorney's Office reportedly said Liddell began the scheme in July 2020 and continued until February 2022. During an audit, a business manager at the school in the southern suburbs of Chicago found that the school's food expenses were $300,000 over budget with several months left in the school year. And students reportedly did not receive any chicken wings at all. Liddell has been in charge of dining services in the district for a decade. Last January, she was charged with theft and operating a criminal enterprise and was eventually sentenced to nine years in prison.
This is not the only case of food theft from students during the pandemic. In March 2020, thieves stole frozen food from a school in Essex, England. These foods were originally prepared for the children of doctors and nurses. In order to allow medical staff to fight the epidemic with peace of mind on the front line, the UK stipulated at the time that the children of medical staff could attend offline courses. The thieves stole the frozen food from the restaurant's refrigerator and took away all the dry food in the kitchen, making it impossible for the school to provide meals for children and staff in the short term. In addition, in 2019, a thief stole 1,000 cartons of milk from a primary school in Lancashire, England, in four months. (Translated and reported by China Youth Network)
