At about 8:42 p.m. local time on August 12, Musk had an online live conversation with Trump on social media X. He apologized for delaying the start time of the live broadcast and reiterated that the live broadcast was delayed due to a cyber attack. The event was originally scheduled to start at 8 p.m. that day.

"X appears to be under a massive DDOS attack, working to shut it down," Musk wrote in a post about half an hour after the event was scheduled to start. Musk also said, "Worst case scenario, the event goes on, but with a reduced number of live listeners, and the conversation is released later."

Musk said a DDOS attack involves sending more traffic to a website than it can handle, overwhelmed X's servers.

Musk also said that the massive cyberattack showed that "a lot of people are opposed to listening to Trump's speech."
