On August 11, the first large-scale AC-excited variable-speed pumped-storage unit in China, Unit 12 of Hebei Fengning Pumped-Storage Power Station, successfully completed 15 days of trial operation and officially went into operation to generate electricity.

Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station is located on the main stream of Luanhe River in Chengde City, Hebei Province. It is currently the world's largest pumped storage power station in terms of installed capacity.

The power station contains 12 pumped storage units with a single unit capacity of 300,000 kilowatts, of which 10 are fixed-speed units and 2 are variable-speed units used for the first time in China. Compared with traditional fixed-speed units, the variable-speed units put into operation this time can change the speed within a certain range and respond to grid commands flexibly and quickly by adjusting the pump power, thereby enhancing the flexible adjustment ability of the pumped storage power station to adapt to the grid load and increasing the stability of the grid.
