A well-known Apple whistleblower claimed that this year's iPhone 16 series will not have major adjustments compared to the previous generation.
On August 11, local time, well-known technology journalist Mark Gurman wrote in his latest column that this year's iPhone 16 series will continue the replacement pattern of previous generations with only some minor adjustments. The iPhone 16 series may be named iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. The appearance is not significantly different from the existing versions, and no major new features will be added.
Gurman expects that the biggest marketing point of the iPhone 16 will be Apple Intelligence, the company's new suite of AI features. All iPhone 16 models will run Apple Intelligence, but it will also be compatible with the iPhone 15 Pro version.
"It's hard to say how tempting this will be. As I said last week, I don't think these features alone are enough to justify an upgrade," Gurman said. "I don't think the new models will create a buying frenzy for Apple."
Previously, Gurman mentioned in his last column that Apple will split Apple Intelligence into two parts in the future, one of which will continue to be free but with limited functions. However, Apple's AI functions are still relatively simple and cannot support user payments. It will take at least three years to develop "something worth charging for."
In his latest column, Gurman also mentioned that a more significant change to the iPhone will be the iPhone 17 in September next year. Next year, Apple will try the concept of a new model again, this time with a thinner design. Apple's idea is to create an "Air" version of the iPhone, between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro. Gurman calls it the "fourth iPhone model."
Gurman also expects Apple to produce a foldable iPhone, but all internal signs indicate that a foldable iPad is an equally important priority, which means we may still see a foldable version of the tablet sooner rather than later.
Haitong International analyst Jeff Pu said in May this year that the iPhone 17 lineup will undergo major changes and will adopt a "completely new design", while improving the front camera and introducing a smaller smart island.
Jeff Pu also said that Apple will launch a new "iPhone 17 Slim" model to replace the "Plus" model in the lineup, but this Slim model is not a continuation of the previous iPhone 12/13 mini. Apple's old rival Samsung is reported to launch a thinner and lighter Galaxy Z Fold6 Slim phone with a larger screen in October this year. Industry insiders believe that if the news is true, the mobile phone industry is expected to change its design direction in the next two years.
