MetaThe Ray-Ban glasses are a wearable technology that can take photos and live stream.

headCEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said the social media experience on mobile phones is "anti-social."

He said“That’s one of the reasons why I’m so interested in smart glasses.”

The founder of the world's largest social media platform admits that most people experience social media through small, bright mobile screens, which is actually quite "anti-social." He hopes smart wearable technology can improve this situation.

In an interview Tuesday at San Francisco's tech community South Park Commons, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said the ways users experience social media on small screens are limited, which is one of the reasons he pursued Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Meta owns major social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads, which are typically accessed through smartphones.

"It's a little weird when you're building social apps where the main thing is to deliver content through this little screen that people carry around with them," Zuckerberg said. "It's very anti-social in a sense. That's why I care so much about smart glasses. It's a much more natural way to do it."

Meta's smart glasses were first released in 2020, and wearers can use them to take photos, live broadcast on Instagram, and ask questions through the company's AI assistant, among other features.

These glasses don't come with the same hardware as the Meta Quest virtual reality headset.Augmented Realityfunctionality, meaning that users won’t see the virtual display pop up in their surroundings.

Still, Zuckerberg is confident that the wearable technology will catch on.

In a recent interview with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Zuckerberg said he believes AI glasses without displays will be worn by millions of people.

He said: "So based on what we've seen so far with the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, my guess is that a display-free AI glasses that costs about $300 will become a very large product that may eventually be used by tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of people, and you will be able to have a conversation with a super interactive AI."
