Recently, South Korean regulatory authorities conducted an investigation into the promotional pages of microneedle-related cosmetics on the Internet and found that more than 80% of them contained false and exaggerated propaganda.
Recently, the Korean Food and Drug Safety Agency investigated 100 promotional pages for microneedle-related cosmetics on the Internet and found that 82 of them involved false and exaggerated propaganda, violating the Korean Cosmetics Act. For example, statements such as "microneedles can penetrate deep into the skin", "promote cell growth", "detoxify the skin", and "enhance immunity" are beyond the definition of cosmetics and can easily mislead consumers into treating cosmetics as medicines. At present, the Korean Food and Drug Safety Agency has notified relevant departments to block relevant web pages and contacted local jurisdiction departments to conduct in-depth investigations on the responsible parties for the sales of relevant cosmetics.
According to official information from the Korean Food and Drug Safety Administration, microneedles are originally used in the fields of medicine and medical devices by penetrating the skin to allow drugs to act on deep tissues such as the dermis. However, the relevant ingredients in microneedle cosmetics do not penetrate the surface of the skin, but only increase the contact area between the skin and the cosmetics through pressing, thereby exerting their effects. In other words, microneedle products that can enter the dermis must obtain safety certification for pharmaceuticals.
Although the survey did not disclose specific companies and products, it has attracted great attention from Korean society. Many consumers said that they had previously trusted the merchants' propaganda too much and did not understand the definition of microneedles between cosmetics and medicines. They will be cautious in purchasing in the future. In recent years, the scale of South Korea's functional cosmetics market has grown rapidly, and it is expected to reach 28.4 trillion won (about 149.1 billion yuan) this year, which is 3.8 times that of 2018. Due to the fierce competition in the Korean cosmetics industry, various brands are constantly looking for breakthroughs in technology and ingredients. In the past two years, various brands have successively launched microneedle series of cosmetics, which have been sought after by consumers, and some popular products have even sold out. The Korean Food and Drug Safety Agency stated that it will strengthen the supervision of advertisements related to microneedle technology, and impose administrative penalties or lawsuits on companies that violate regulations.
