If there were any doubts that more Xbox games would come to PlayStation, Microsoft's latest fiscal 2024 fourth quarter earnings report and subsequent earnings call undoubtedly dispelled that doubt. With Xbox hardware sales falling again by 42% this quarter, the company has made it clear that it will redouble its efforts to develop content and services.
Why does Microsoft need to bring Xbox games to PlayStation and other platforms?
Microsoft's gaming revenue increased in the fourth quarter thanks to its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood said the company expects its content and services revenue to grow, but Xbox hardware sales are expected to decline further.
"Our investment in gaming is fundamentally about having the games we love, the games we've always loved, the right mix of Xbox and console content, and expanding on that to make our content applicable wherever people play games," said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
Hood added: “Our real goal is to provide broad content to more users in more places and really build a platform that for us is more like a software annuity and subscription business, while strengthening the ownership of the transactions and the intellectual property.”
Nadella used Fallout as an example to highlight how Microsoft can bring its IP to "new audiences" in a variety of ways, including but not limited to TV shows.
