On August 7 local time, at the request of Iran, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation held a special meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to discuss the assassination of Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) leader Haniyeh, the situation in the Gaza Strip and the conflict between Israel and Palestine and other regional countries.
What are the main contents of the special meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation? What signals does it send? What impact will it have on the situation in the Middle East? Let's take a look at the analysis and interpretation by Niu Xinchun, professor of the Institute of Chinese and Arab Countries of Ningxia University.
The main content is the attack on Haniya and the conflict in the Gaza Strip
Niu Xinchun, professor at the Institute of Chinese Arab Countries of Ningxia University: This emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was held at the request of Iran and Palestine. There are two main topics, one is the assassination of Haniyeh, and the other is the current conflict in Gaza. On the first issue, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation clearly condemned Israel in its final statement, believing that Israel had violated Iran's airspace, territory and sovereignty. At the same time, it also clearly stated that Israel bears full responsibility for this matter. On the issue of the Gaza conflict, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also called on Israel to immediately end the Gaza conflict and allow humanitarian aid to enter Gaza unimpeded. At the same time, in order to completely resolve the conflict between Palestine and Israel, it is necessary to implement the "Arab Initiative" to allow Palestine to establish a state and realize the actions stipulated in the "two-state solution."
Member states have conflicting attitudes and are worried about the escalation of regional tensions
Niu Xinchun, professor at the Institute of China-Arab Countries of Ningxia University: Iran originally hoped that at this meeting, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation would clearly support Iran in taking military retaliation against Israel. However, although the final statement believed that Israel was fully responsible, it did not explicitly support Iran in taking military action.
Before the meeting, the United States also called on the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to put pressure on Iran and ask Iran not to escalate the situation, but the Organization of Islamic Cooperation did not do so. This reflects the contradictory mentality of Islamic countries and Middle Eastern countries on the current conflict between Iran and Israel, or the entire Gaza conflict.
On the one hand, these countries condemn and hate Israel, whether it is the actions taken by Israel in Gaza or against Iran. At the same time, almost all countries are worried and afraid that the regional situation will further escalate and turn into a full-scale war, so they clearly condemned Israel. But on the other hand, they are particularly worried about future military actions and are cautious.
So this meeting may be a small political and moral victory for Iran, because it clearly condemned Israel and held Israel fully responsible. But this meeting will have little impact on a possible military conflict between Iran and Israel in the future.
